Whirlwind Table Mats – Coaster Set

Whirlwind, the spiral storm formation funnelling at the centre. The complexity and severity of nature can bring disaster but in the creative perspective, it presents an energetic approach.

Streams of spiral strokes creating a balanced centre are the factors that inspired me to proceed with this project.

After seeing the great hit with my circular wheeling placemat, I was looking for another circular placemat or table mat. this time it was for my dining table. The pattern should be simple with an aggregated presentation.

I stumbled upon a pin on Pinterest. It just stuck with me. An idea emerged to make a contemporary design by expanding the circumference.

Here, comes my whirlwind approach to creating a contemporary kitchen decor or home decor. The combination is bringing excitement in your minimalistic dining table design. Without any extra effort, you are defining that family togetherness or those dinner dates.

Process:

The pattern for Whirlwind Table Mats – Coaster Set is very simple. The table mat or the coaster is a combination of Single Crochet (SC), Back Loop Single Crochet (BLOSC) and Skip Stitch (SS) stitches.

Pattern:-

Colour Selection – Sea blue as the main colour (MC) for table mats. Yellow, maroon and hot blue as contrasting colour (CC) for coasters.

TABLE MAT:-

R1: Start with Chain 22. From the 2nd chain SC in 6 next chains, Ch 1, SS next, 2 SC in next stitch, SC in next 11 stitches, SS last 2 in the chain, Ch 1 and turn. TOTAL 19 SC.

R2: BLOSC in next 13 SC, SC in ch -1 space, SC in next 6 SC, Ch 1 and turn. TOTAL 19 SC.

R3: BLOSC in next 6 SC, Ch 1, SS next, 2 SC in next stitch, SC in next 10 SC, SS last 2 SC, Ch 1 and turn. TOTAL 18 SC.

R4: BLOSC in next 12 SC, SC in ch -1 space, SC in next 6 SC, Ch 1 and turn. TOTAL 18 SC.

R5: BLOSC in next 6 SC, Ch 1, SS next, 2 SC in next stitch, SC in next 9 SC, SS last 2 SC, Ch 1 and turn. TOTAL 17 SC.

R6: BLOSC in next 11 SC, SC in ch -1 space, SC in next 6 SC, Ch 1 and turn. TOTAL 17 SC.

R7: BLOSC in next 6 SC, Ch 1, SS next, 2 SC in next stitch, SC in next 8 SC, SS last 2 SC, Ch 1 and turn. TOTAL 16 SC.

R8: BLOSC in next 10 SC, SC in ch -1 space, SC in next 6 SC, Ch 1 and turn. TOTAL 16 SC.

R9: BLOSC in next 6 SC, Ch 1, SS next, 2 SC in next stitch, SC in next 7 SC, SS last 2 SC, Ch 1 and turn. TOTAL 15 SC.

R10: BLOSC in next 9 SC, SC in ch -1 space, SC in next 6 SC, Ch 1 and turn. TOTAL 15 SC.

R11: BLOSC in next 6 SC, Ch 1, SS next, 2 SC in next stitch, SC in next 6 SC, SS last 2 SC, Ch 1 and turn. TOTAL 14 SC.

R12: BLOSC in next 8 SC, SC in ch -1 space, SC in next 6 SC, Ch 1 and turn. TOTAL 14 SC.

R13: BLOSC in next 6 SC, Ch 1, SS next, 2 SC in next stitch, SC in next 5 SC, SS last 2 SC, Ch 1 and turn. TOTAL 13 SC.

R14: BLOSC in next 7 SC, SC in ch -1 space, SC in next 6 SC, Ch 1 and turn. TOTAL 13 SC.

R15: BLOSC in all the stitches, including the skipped stitches of the previous rows. TOTAL 21 SC.

R16: BLOSC in 21 SC. TOTAL 21 SC.

Repeat 1-16 for 8 times. In R1 instead of chains stitches, you will get SC from the previous row.

Total pointed swirls should be 9. Sew in the BLOSC and chain only. Do not close the centre.

COASTER:-

I followed the same pattern as mentioned by Ann Mancini-Williams of Glamour 4 You.

Instead of closing the centre, I left 0.5″ of space to create a circular centre hole mimicking the table mat.

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Diameter table mat: 16″
  • Diameter coaster: 11″
