Winter/Fall Seasoned Knit Ringed Sunset Teen Hat Free Pattern - Knot My Designs

Ringed Sunset Teen Hat

How do we connect to strangers? It is scary if you think. But sometimes little conversations with strangers can turn out to be great experiences.

Let me share something. It was a usual nice warm beautiful day. I was on my way to my apartment, when I saw a girl, waiting for the school bus, holding Enid Blyton’s Secret Seven novel (a mystery novel for kids). I smiled at her and said, “It’s my favourite” and passed; carrying silent, innocent but careful demeanour, she smiled back at me.

I just have moved 3 steps ahead and turned back to her. “Have you read Famous Five?”, I asked. She nodded no. “If you like Enid Blyton then try that series. It’s my favourite too!”, I responded to her and I noticed a twinkle in her eyes as she nodded ok to me.

Well, now I am mulling over it as I am proceeding with my knitting design. The design is commonly found everywhere so I am not following any pattern. I am going with the flow and thinking about my morning encounter.

Should I have connected more? Talked about her interests? These questions were circling with so much hesitation about what is right and wrong.

I do not know if I would’ve continued further because A stranger woman approaching a little girl and talking to her, could be taken wrongly, even if my intentions were not to harm her at all. My mind was constantly saying, “Move ahead. Move ahead. You are not sure what her grandpa will think of me. Look at the way he is staring at you suspiciously”.

If I see her next time, I will try to talk to her and share my experience with a series of mystery novels I read in my childhood. But I am still hesitant.

What do you think? Should I talk to her again or leave that episode as a sweet experience.

I am also mulling over my knitting pattern now. Should I make a simple beanie with a ribbed brim or give a twist?

I ditched my initial method and decided to include 2 rows of contrasting colour yarn. I am pretty confident that if it doesn’t look good to me then I will undo it.

But it turned out to be different and attractive so at least one decision was final.

The name – Ringed Sunset Teen Hat – is following my twist; sunset colour yarn with stripes of contrasting colour like rings around the sun at dusk.

Process:

The knitting instructions are extremely simple. The basic stitches (knit and purl) are used in this pattern and multiples of 4. I have used circular knitting needles and worked in rounds. Use stitch markers to mark the join. The beanie top is sown to complete the beanie.

I am using the bottom-top approach here with Knit stitch (KS), Purl stitch (PS), Long-tail cast-on (LTCO) and bind-off (BO) knitting techniques.

PATTERN:-

BRIM:-

R1: LTCO 120 stitches; turn. Total 120 counts

R2: 2 KS, 2 PS; ending with PS; shift stitch marker from one needle to another. Total of 120 counts

Repeat R2 for 2″ to make the brim of the beanie.

BODY:-

R1: Using Orange Yarn (Main Colour – MC), KS across; shift the stitch marker from one needle to another. Total of 120 KS counts

R2-R6: Repeat R1 for 5 rows using MC.

R7-R8: Repeat R1 for 2 rows using Cream Yarn ( Contrasting Colour – CC).

Repeat R1-R8 6 more times.

Repeat R1-R6 for one more time using MC.

FINISHES:-

I have worked in rounds with my circular knitting needles, so I do not have to sew the sides. Turn inside out. Sew and close the top of the body of your beanie. Turn again to face the right side of the beanie.

Caution Section:-

  • I am using 2ply Indian yarn and knitting needle is 4mm. Use the needle suggested in your label sheet of the yarn.
  • Whenever you are purling for a ribbing stitch, try to slightly pull the yarn after each stitch to create the perfect rib.
  • The tension and elasticity of the yarn define the shape of your beanie. This can change the initial count of the beanie.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

Circumference: 23″

Height: 10″

Optional Alterations:-

  • Add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pom-pom.
  • Attach flowers, beads or a bow made of crochet, plastic, suede leather etc to give cuteness to the hat.
  • Increase the height of the beanie to give a slouchy effect.
  • Increase or decrease the LCO to make the same design for different ages.

Remember: do not over accessorize it. This takes away the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegant simplicity!!

Style Aisle:

  • The bright colour will bring colour to the white winter. You will love to flaunt it.
  • Pair it with beige, denim, light grey jackets and you have brought autumn in winter.
  • You can make a matching scarf too. I will suggest to keep it subtle.
  • The combination of hat and scarf will excessively explode the overall outfit.
  • One pop of colour either scarf or hat either with a plain jacket and jeans combo will give you an exciting look.

Materials:

  1. India Yarn: Vardhman Yarn – cream – 1 ball.
    • Vardhman Brilon – salmon – 1 ball.
  2. US Yarn: Patons – tangy – 2 balls
    • Patons – aran– 1 ball.
  3. Circular Knitting Needles: 4.5 mm
  4. Needle
  5. Scissors
  6. Measuring Tape
  7. Stitch Markers: My stitch markers are the mini safety pins we get from clothing tags.
  • Note: Feel free to play around with different branded yarns. They should give the consistent flow of the pattern using a constant number crochet hook.
  • Either go for the yarns with the same recommended crochet hook OR choose the yarn and change the crochet hooks along as you proceed with the pattern. This might be tricky for beginners.

Happy Knitting!!!
