Winter/Fall Seasoned Knit Marmalade Moss Child Beanie Free Pattern - Knot My Designs

Marmalade Moss Child Beanie

Learning a new stitch always scares me at first. I take time to convince myself that I can do it and then I jump right into it. I do not mind reworking on the same stitch or same row again and again till I get it right. But there is an initial punch in the stomach whenever I attempt something new. I know this is weird. Do you feel the same? I do not know if this happens only to me.

If you have seen my knitting work then you must have found out that till now I have been working around the basics of knitting i.e. garter stitch or stockinette or rib stitch. So when I decided to learn a new stitch I had to pull myself out of the comfort first and try something new. It was a blunder at first. But I think I was able to manage it.

If you look closely there are a few misses of rounds and I made a couple of knit rows together instead of following the pattern. Also, I was making an adult beanie. However, I used a tight stitch style and it came out to be a size fitting for a child. Well, it turned out to be good. The mishap design made a new beanie overall. All thanks to the texture of the yarn. Wouldn’t you agree? I am still proud of my work.

The beanie name is Marmalade Moss Child Beanie because I used knit moss stitch for a child-size head. The orange colour reminded me of the marmalade I was having during the creation phase.

Process:

The knitting instructions are simple to learn. The basic stitches (knit and purl) are used in this pattern and multiples of 8. I have used straight knitting needles. I have made a flat rectangular design. Every row is turned to make this beanie. The sides of the rectangles are sown to form a beanie and one side is closed off to make the base of the beanie. A new stitch – Moss stitch is used here for the body of the beanie.

I am using the bottom-top approach here with Moss Stitch (MS), Knit stitch (KS), Purl stitch (PS), Long-tail cast-on (LTCO) and bind-off (BO) knitting techniques.

PATTERN:-

BRIM:-

R1: LTCO. Total 120 counts.

R2: KS across; turn. Total 120 KS.

R3: 2 KS, 2 PS every row; turn. Total 120 counts.

Repeat R3 (KS on KS and PS on PS) for 2″ to make the brim. Do not cut the yarn.

BODY:-

R1: KS1, * PS1, KS1; rep from * to end of row; turn. Total 120 counts
R2: PS1,* KS1, PS1; rep from * to end of row.; turn. Total 120 counts
R3: KS1, * PS1, KS1; rep from * to end of row; turn. Total 120 counts
R4: PS1,* KS1, PS1; rep from * to end of row.; turn. Total 120 counts

Repeat R1-R4 [Moss stitch] till you get the required height of the beanie and BO.

FINISHES:-

Lay flat the rectangular design. You can treat it the right side and the underneath as the wrong side. Sew the breadth of the rectangle with the right side inside. sew and close the top of the body of your beanie. Turn inside out to face the right side of the beanie.

Caution Section:-

  • I am using 2ply Indian yarn and knitting needle is 4mm. Use the needle suggested in your label sheet of the yarn.
  • Whenever you are purling for a ribbing stitch, try to slightly pull the yarn after each stitch to create the perfect rib.
  • The tension and elasticity of the yarn define the shape of your beanie. This can change the initial count of the beanie.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

Circumference: 21″

Height: 9″

Optional Alterations:-

  • Add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pom-pom.
  • Attach flowers, beads or a bow made of crochet, plastic, suede leather etc to give cuteness to the hat.
  • Increase the height of the beanie to give a slouchy effect.
  • Increase or decrease the LCO to make the same design for different ages.

Remember: do not over accessorize it. This takes away the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegant simplicity!!

Materials:

  1. India Yarn: Vardhman Brilon – salmon – 1 ball.
  2. US Yarn: Patons – tangy – 2 balls
  3. Straight Knitting Needles: 4.5 mm
  4. Needle
  5. Scissors
  6. Measuring Tape
  7. Stitch Markers: My stitch markers are the mini safety pins we get from clothing tags.
  • Note: Feel free to play around with different branded yarns. They should give the consistent flow of the pattern using a constant number crochet hook.
  • Either go for the yarns with the same recommended crochet hook OR choose the yarn and change the crochet hooks along as you proceed with the pattern. This might be tricky for beginners.

Happy Knitting!!!
