Winter/Fall Seasoned Crochet Littoral Female Adult Hat Free Pattern - Knot My Designs

Littoral Female Adult Hat

What is your favourite outdoor activity at any time of the year?

If you ask me, I would say walking on the beach. I agree that natural large water bodies attract me more than the mesmerizing mountains covered under layers of cloud or scenic waterfalls or streams emptying out from nooks of the mountain slopes.

The vastness of the ocean showcases the potential of depth and calmness.

While absorbing the enormity of this space and viewing those littorals – occurring at the edge of the shore, I feel the satisfaction in not knowing the mysteries of nature.

The power of waves and currents is felt best when they beat against the rocks at the foot of the cliffs forming littoral caves or caverns.

These ridges across the coastline or at the base of the cliffs caught my attention and my mind wandered for months to present this experience in my craft.

Finally, after a long contemplation, I came with an idea of making cables (mimicking ridges) along the brim of the beanie forming littoral zone with the rest of the body representing waves of the ocean.

Process:

The process is very simple. It is done in two sections. One is working on the brim and making the cables and then you join it at the edges to start working on the beanie. The stitches used are Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC), Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC), Double Crochet (DC), Front Post Treble Crochet (FPTC), Single Crochet (SC), Back-loop Double Crochet (BLODC), Slip Stitch (SL ST).

Sew at the top to make the slouchy hat.

BRIM:-

R1: Starting with Ch 16 +2, DC on the 3rd chain from the hook; turn. Total 16 DC.

R2: Ch2 (treat as 1st DC), BPDC in next DC, DC on 2 DC, BPDC on 8 DC, DC on 2 DC, BPDC in next DC, DC; turn. Total 10 BPDC, 6 DC.

R3: Ch2 (treat as 1st DC), FPDC in next BPDC, DC on 2 DC, skip next 4 BPDC, FPTC on next 4 BPDC, move the hook behind the working 4FPTC and do 4 FPTC on the skipped 4 BPDC, DC on 2 DC, FPDC in next BPDC, DC; turn. Total 2 FPDC, 8 FPTC,  6 DC.

R4: Ch2 (treat as 1st DC), BPDC in FPDC, DC on 2 DC, BPDC on 8 FPTC, DC on 2 DC, BPDC in next FPDC, DC; turn. Total 10 BPDC, 6 DC.

Repeat R3-R4 till you get the 36 rows or the desired length as the crown size.

BODY:-

Do not cut the yarn. Continue to join the edges of the cable. Use chain stitch of the beginning of the cable and Back loop of the last row, join it.

Chain 1, 2 SC on every horizontal DC; join at the beginning of the SC using SL ST. Total 72 SC.

R1: Ch2, DC on every SC; join at the beginning of the DC using SL ST. Total 72 SC.

R2: Ch2, BLODC on every DC; join at the beginning of the DC using SL ST. Total 72 SC.

Repeat R2 till you get the desired height of the beanie. Sew at the end to close off the top opening.

Caution Section:-

  1. Keep measuring the length of the cable as you move to have the correct circumference.
  2. Also, notice the number of rows you worked on to get the final length, as that will be the row count for the body of the beanie.
  3. The pattern is pretty easy to follow. You need to make sure the count does not increase or decrease every row.
  4. The body of the beanie is pretty simple to follow. It is the brim or edging that you need to focus.
  5. Focus on the cabled brim.
  6. I have used 5mm hook for cables to get freer Frontpost and Backpost stitches and 4.5 mm for the body of the slouchy part.
