Winter/Fall Seasoned Knit Fall Stockinette Beanie Free Pattern - Knot My Designs

Knit Fall Stockinette Beanie

After loving the crochet for more than a decade now, I started trying knitting, which I would call as the closest sibling of crocheting. This new style opened yet another opportunity to dabble with style and patterns, and I am getting a lot of ideas regarding designs. However, in the midst of these, I couldn’t keep up with the equally creative and unique names for each design. So this time I am going with a basic stitch name for this beanie.

I loved the colour of this wool. I had earlier wanted to introduce this pattern in the fall of 2018. But I delayed completing the pattern, so here I am presenting the pattern.

In India, summer is arriving in a couple of weeks. But as per mid-western cities in the US, I feel I can still proceed with posting winter accessories.

I hope that snowfall is coming to an end and the spring should be around the corner. This crimson-like shade of this wool would remind you of the maple leaves that carpet the street during this time of the year.

Process:

The knitting instructions are very simple. The basic stitches (knit and purl) are used in this pattern. I have used straight knitting needles. I have made a flat rectangular design as shown below. Every row is turned to make this beanie. The sides of the rectangles are sown to form a beanie and one side is closed off to make the base of the beanie. I am using the bottom top approach here with Knit stitch (KS), Purl stitch (PS), Long-tail cast-on (LTCO) and bind-off (BO) knitting techniques.

Pattern:-

R1: LTCO. Total of 110 counts.

R2: KS across; turn. Total of 110 KS

R3: PS across; turn. Total of 110 PS

Repeat R2-R3 alternatively [Stockinette stitch]¹ till you get the required height of the beanie and BO.

¹[Stockinette Stitch:

R1: With straight knitting needles, cast-off the required number.

R2: Knit across till end and turn.

R3: Purl across till end and turn.

Repeat R2-R3 alternatively.]

FINISHES:-

Lay flat the rectangular design. You can treat it the right side and the underneath as the wrong side. Sew the breadth of the rectangle with the right side inside. sew and close the top of the body of your beanie. Turn inside out to face the right side of the beanie.

Please note that the edge will curl up. That is automatically formed due to the nature of the stitches used. Need not to panic and instead roll up neatly to give a defined edge.

Caution Section:-

  • I am using 2ply Indian yarn and knitting needle is 4mm. Use the needle suggested in your label sheet of the yarn.
  • When you are doing Knit & purl in ribbing stitch, try to slightly pull the yarn after each stitch to create the perfect ribbing.
  • The tension and elasticity of the yarn define the shape of your beanie. Because of this, the initial count of the beanie might change.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

Circumference: 22″

Height: 9″

Optional Alterations:-

  • Add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pom-pom.
  • Attach flowers, beads or a bow made of crochet, plastic, suede leather etc to give cuteness to the hat.
  • Roll up the brim to define an edge.
  • Increase the height of the beanie to give a slouchy effect.
  • Increase or decrease the LCO to make the same design for different ages.
  • Switch between the main colour and a contrast colour while working on the body of the beanie to make another beanie completely.

Remember: do not over accessorize it. This takes away the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegant simplicity!!
