Crochet C2C Elephant Blowing Bubbles Baby Blanket / Graphghan - Knot My Designs

Elephant Blowing Bubbles Graphghan

New modern art is pixel or animation. I am happy that I am able to gain some hands-on experience. After trying basic shapes and easy animal sketches, I have moved into subject-based animated art.

My client wished to have an elephant theme baby blanket. With so many inspirations around, I tried the elephant-bubble idea. Using pixilart, I created an elephant-blowing-bubbles graph and presented it to him. He loved the final picture.

It took me 2-3 hours to get the complete picture. I am happy with the final output. I am really blessed that my customers do trust my vision and fall in love with the final product.

Anyways, this incident has inspired me to move more on animation. I am planning to reproduce different topics through pixilart. I may not convert them into blankets but I will be releasing those grid-graphs for everyone to try out. The pattern is corner-to-corner crochet. Also, we can try out cross stitching, knitting etc. to make the final item.

Process:

Collect the colours that you plan to use for the blanket. Start C2C crocheting and then C2C decreasing crocheting to complete the graph. Once c2c square consumes 0.75″ – 1″ depending on the crochet hook and yarn used.

For this blanket, I have created 60 grids pixel graph. It should give 40″X40″ blanket or more.

This pattern requires proper counting and marking after completion of each square to avoid any mistakes.

Caution Section:-

  1. Print the coloured graph ( or black and white graph and mark the colours) and number all the rows and columns. Here, it is 60×60. The C2C stitch grows diagonally.
  2. If you have the black and white printer then print the graph and colour the blocks using colour pencils or mark G for green, Y for Yellow, Br for Brown, Sk for light brown or skin etc. so that you do not miss out the shape.
  3. Mark each row and column so that you know at which row you are while working.
  4. Also, count the number of blocks use 1 colour in that working row. Remember we work diagonally in C2C.
  5. Starting with ¹C2C Crochet Stitch Increasing ( focusing on the colour change) increase diagonally for 60 rows.
  6. Start ²decreasing C2C Crochet Stitch (focusing on the colour change as per the graph) decrease till the count reaches.

Edging:-

If you want to increase the size or if you like defining an edge then you can go with SC or DC row or below.

R1: Ch 1, Single Crochet (SC) around each post. 3 SC at the corners.

R2: Ch 2, Double Crochet on each SC. 3 DC at the corners or at the corner 3SC – 3DC on the middle 3 SC group.

R3: Ch 2, Half-Herringbone Double Crochet (HHDC) around each DC. 3 HHDC at the corner DC or 3 HHDC in the middle of the 3 DC group.

¹C2C crochet stitch / Increasing C2C Crochet Stitch:

  • [Chain 6.
  • R1: Double Crochet (DC) in 4th chain from the hook. 2 DC in next 2 chains. [ 1st corner block is made]
  • R2: turn the work, chain 6. DC in 4th chain from the hook. 2 DC in next 2 chains.  Slip stitch on the chain 3. (Chain 3, 3 DC) in the same chain 3 space of the previous row. [2nd row contains 2 blocks]
  • R3: Repeat R2 [3rd row will contain 3 blocks. Likewise, the Row-Number will have same number blocks.]
  • Continue R2 to increase horizontally and vertically up to the required number on the graph.]

²Decreasing C2C crochet stitch:

  • [turn the last row. slip stitch on 1st DC, 2nd DC, 3 DC.
  • Slip Stitch(SL ST) chain 3 space. (Chain 3, 3 DC) in same chain 3 space.
  • Continue (SL ST, chain 3, 3 DC) in next chain 3 space.
  • Repeat till the last 2nd block. SL ST in the last chain 3 space. ]

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Grid Graph: 65×65
  • Length: 42″
  • Width: 42″

Optional Alterations:-

Different ideas that can be implemented into this blanket to make it your own.

  • The edging can be made of Single Crochet (SC), Crab Stitch, Slip Stitch, Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC).
  • Instead of regular yarn, fur yarn will bring out a pop to the border.
  • Rather than going for 3rd colour for the border, use both the base colours around for alternate rows.
    • The border shouldn’t be too broad to pop out. The purpose should be to provide a clean edge.
  • You can add pom-pom or tassels (matching the colour with the edging or the base colour) at the 4 corners. Link to make pom-pom and tassels.
  • Avoid the border and just add tassels/pompoms made of a mixture of the base colours.
  • You can attach flowers, beads, appliques or a bow made of crochet, plastic, suede leather, fabric etc to make it more interesting.
  • You can increase the total size of the blanket by adding a few rows of borders.

Remember: do not over accessorise it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegant simplicity!!

  1. How long does it took you to get to that final result ? I’m working on a similar project (very first one) and, even if this technique is very interesting, I think it is soooo long ! I mean, crochet itself isn’t really complicated, but securing the threads took me as much time than crochet the project itself.
This being said, your work is beautiful and gave me the courage to get through mine and see the final result !

    1. Hi Nickie,

Thank you for being inspired by the work! I was working continuously for 2 weeks. I was so excited about this project that I actually worked 8-10 hours every day. 🙂 I do assign one day for securing the threads and that is the most boring part. This one was the easiest for me. There are only 3-4 colour changes and I created small bobbins for the bubbles.

      Happy Crocheting!

  2. I have been looking for an elephant pattern since the birth of my 3 year old granddaughter Skylee. They gave her a layette at the hospital with an orange elephant on the t-shirt and other items. I’ve always wanted to make her an afghan with the same motif, orange elephant on a white background. So I guess I can’t do the bubbles, though I really think they are cute. Thank you, thank you for this pattern. I have been crocheting since age 18 and am now 71. But I’m not a designer. I need a pattern. So I feel blessed to have found yours.

    1. Hi Donna,

I am feeling so grateful. Thank you so much for loving the pattern. You have customized the pattern for your need is one step to designing. Keep on making small customizations, that way slowly you can start making your own designs. I am motivated to continue crocheting till I am 71.

      Happy Crocheting,
      Apeksha
