Canary Herringbone Slouch Beanie

It is quite interesting that Herringbone is an ancient architectural style having its root in the 11th century. This pattern made with laying bricks obliquely in alternate rows was one of the famous art forms to create a building facade. Its striking resemblance with a fish bone earned it the name of herring ; fairly small silvery fish.

Unlike any contemporary pattern, this is very conventional and brings poise and warmth in its appearance. In order to add more charm to this pattern, I decided to opt for a brighter shade that would light it up and a beanie pattern that enhances the style with charisma. So here comes the Canary Herringbone Slouch beanie.

Process:

The procedure is easy. All you need to know is Herringbone Half Double Crochet Stitch (HHDC) and Slip Stitch in back loop (BLOSLST). The slouchy beanie is made from bottom to top in rounds. The top is sewn shut to complete the beanie. Since it is an adult beanie, I am making 72 chains.

R1: Chain (CH) 72; join at the beginning chain with a Slip stitch (SL ST). Total 72 counts.

R2: CH 1, BLOSLST in each CH; join at the 1st BLOSLST with SL ST. Total 72 counts.

R3: CH 2, HHDC in each BLOSLST; join at the 1st HHDC with SL ST. Total 72 counts.

R4: CH 1, BLOSLST in each HHDC; join at the 1st BLOSLST with SL ST. Total 72 counts.

R5-R6: CH 1, BLOSLST in each BLOSLST; join at the 1st BLOSLST with SL ST. Total 72 counts.

Repeat R3-R6 till you get the desired length. You can increase the length to give slouchy look.

End the last row with R3 to sew properly.

Caution Section:-

  1. The yarn elasticity and texture define the design. Thus, each work will give a slightly different look.
  2. To get this appearance, use simple straight yarn and light colour.
  3. Measure the initial chain for the appropriate age. The chain count can increase or decrease. It is 70+ for adult and 58-70 for newborn to teen.
  4. It is worked in rounds which can shrink the circumference a bit.
  5. The technique i.e. loose stitch or tight stitch also determines the size and look of the beanie.
  6. Chain loosely and make loose slip stitches for R1, R2 else the beanie will shrink.
  7. Each slip stitch needs to be loosely crocheted.

  1. Hi…I have a couple of questions on your Canary herringbone slouch beanie. When you connect at each row you join with a slip stitch to the first stitch, then you procedure in that same stitch with a chain one or chain two depending on what row you’re working on. So my question is after you do your slip stitch join and chain in that same stitch, is that considered all you do in that stitch:(the beginning stitch for the row) or do you also put your first stitch for that row also or do you go to the next stitch to put that new stitch. Also, where you are joining each row do you end up having a slanted row up the back of the hat where you’ve joined each row, or do you get a straight tow up the back of the hat. Would it be possible to see the back of the hat you’ve made to get a better idea as to how it looks. Thank you. I love the pattern so far. Diana

    1. Hi Diana,
First of all, thank you so much for loving the pattern!!!
For question 1: I slip stitch and chain in the same stitch throughout. In the same beginning stitch, I do the stitch. so the chain (ch 1 or ch 2) is sort of filler. Join at the beginning of the ch 1/ch 2 stitch. You have an extra stitch to diffuse the join and create a straight vertical join.
For question 2: Because there are 2 stitches at the beginning the row join align in a single line vertically. I do not have the beanie with me anymore as it was a custom order but you can try it out and let me know if this creates a seamless join for you. I will try to recreate the pattern again soon and update it here.

      Take care and stay safe!
