Crochet Basket Weave Toddler Beanie Free Pattern - Knot My Designs

Basket Weave Toddler Beanie

If you search online for an all-time popular pattern design of this era; Chevron, basketweave, and trellis will pop up in your result page. Basketweave with the interlacing pattern defines the checkered pattern in a different style altogether.

I wanted to create a male beanie design while continuing the experiment towards modernity. Using the basketweave stitch, I can bring out the classic flare. I combined the two ideas and formed the design of a 2×2 basket weave design. The pattern focuses on the boyhood with rigged touch.

Try it out and share your experience with me in the below comments section, on how did you find the pattern.

Process:

The free crochet pattern is using Front Post Double Crochet stitch (FPDC), Back Post Double Crochet stitch (BPDC), Double Crochet Stitch (DC), Single Crochet Stitch (SC) and Slip Stitch (SL ST) in rounds. The beanie is using top to bottom approach.

The regular basketweave design has 4×4 criss-cross pattern. Here, I am trying to create a basketweave pattern with 2×2 criss-cross pattern. Instead of 4 FPDC and 4 BPDC, I am using 2FPDC and 2BPDC. The process has base, body and brim.

Base:-

R1: Starting with Magic Circle, 10 DC; join with SL ST on 1st DC. Total 10 ST.

R2: Ch2, 2 DC in every DC; join with SL ST on 1st DC. Total 20 ST.

R3: Ch2, DC in DC, 2 DC in next DC; repeat ; join with SL ST on 1st DC. Total 30 ST.

R4: Ch2, DC in 2 DC, 2 DC in next DC; repeat ; join with SL ST on 1st DC. Total 40 ST.

R5: Ch2, DC in 3 DC, 2 DC in next DC; repeat ; join with SL ST on 1st DC. Total 50 ST.

R6: Ch2, DC in 4 DC, 2 DC in next DC; repeat ; join with SL ST on 1st DC. Total 60 ST.

R7: Ch2, DC in 5 DC, 2 DC in next DC; repeat ; join with SL ST on 1st DC. Total 70 ST.

Body:-

R8: Ch2, FPDC in next 2 DC, BPDC in next 2 DC; repeat ; join with SL ST on 1st DC. Total 70 ST.

R9: Ch2, FPDC in next 2 FPDC, BPDC in next 2 BPDC; repeat ; join with SL ST on 1st DC. Total 70 ST.

R10: Ch2, BPDC in next 2 FPDC, FPDC in next 2 BPDC; repeat ; join with SL ST on 1st DC. Total 70 ST.

R10: Ch2, BPDC in next 2 BPDC, FPDC in next 2 FPDC; repeat ; join with SL ST on 1st DC. Total 70 ST.

Repeat R9-R12 4 times or till you get 3-4″ body.

Brim:-

Change the colour to salmon, CH1, SC in stitch around. 70 ST. Repeat this 3 more times to get 1″ brim. You can increase or decrease the row count depending on the yarn thickness and crochet hook used.

Caution Section:-

  1. Depending on the elasticity of the yarn and your stitching style, the brim length can increase or decrease. To get the optimal size, join the edges roughly using SL ST and check the circumference after stretching.
  2. For Brim, You can increase or decrease the row count depending on the yarn thickness and crochet hook used.
  3. For Body too, You can increase/decrease the row count in batches of 4 rows- 2 rows of 2 FPDC and 2 BPDC following with 2 rows of 2BPDC and 2 FPDC.
  4. For Base, the basic increase of the crown using DC is used which can be altered. You should focus on the circumference of the toddler child. 18″-19″ should be the circumference.
  5. To determine the height of the body, calculate the radius of the base + brim height. Subtract from the desired height of beanie.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Circumference: 18″-19″
  • Height: 8″

Optional Alterations:-

  • You can increase the base diameter to give a more slouchy feel. Also, increase the height of the beanie.
  • You can add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pom-pom.
  • You can attach flowers, beads or a bow made of crochet, plastic, suede leather etc to give cuteness to the hat.
  • You can put fur edging or tassels to give a different touch.

Remember: do not over accessorise it. This takes away the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegant simplicity!!
