Crochet Marled Slouch Toddler Beanie Free Pattern - Knot My Designs

Marled Slouch Toddler Beanie

Have you taken a ride on a camel? If not, then I will suggest to try out once. The after effects will be painful but it will definitely be an experience of your lifetime. Even if you have experienced horse riding, the sitting and the ride of a camel is completely different.

The camel is made to seat on the ground and you are supposed to ride to the seating placed in between the humps on the shoulder. The rider will make a whoosh hoosh, cluck! cluck, indicating the camel to rise up and stand.

Whoaaa… it was an adventure that I’ll never forget. I did have leg and back pains due to the humpy walk of the camel but I enjoyed the ride for sure.

You will be thinking, why on earth I am sharing this experience and tempting you to try it. I just recalled my trip with camel when I was making camel stitch for this beanie.

I will say try out both, you’ll love these experiences. 🙂

Process:

The free crochet pattern is made from top to bottom in rounds. The beanie is created using Half Double Crochet stitch (HDC) and Knit Style stitch or Camel stitch (CS) i.e. Half Double crochet in 3rd loop stitch. The process has a base and body.

Base:-

R1: Starting with Magic Circle, CH2, 10 HDC; join at the 1st HDC using SL ST. Total 10 ST.

R2: CH2, 2 HDC in every HDC; join at the 1st HDC using SL ST. Total 20 ST.

R3: CH2, HDC in HDC, 2 HDC in next HDC; repeat ; join at the 1st HDC using SL ST. Total 30 ST.

R4: CH2, HDC in 2 HDC, 2 HDC in next HDC; repeat ; join at the 1st HDC using SL ST. Total 40 ST.

Repeat R8-R14 for 2 more times.

Caution Section:-

  1. Depending on the elasticity of the yarn and your stitching style, the brim length can increase or decrease. To get the optimal size, join the edges roughly using SL ST and check the circumference after stretching.
  2. The yarn is 4ply or fingering yarn and I have used small crochet hook of 4mm. You might need to use the recommended crochet hook that is displayed.
  3. The number of rows and stitch count can alter drastically. Focus on the circumference and height specifically for toddlers. If you are using 5mm +crochet hook then your stitch count for every should be between 50-60 and rows shouldn’t cross more than 20.
  4. For 12-24 months toddlers, head circumference is 17-18″, and height is 6.5-7.25.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Circumference: 17″-18″
  • Height: 8″

Optional Alterations:-

  • You can increase the base diameter to give a more slouchy feel. Also, increase the height of the beanie.
  • You can add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pom-pom.
  • You can attach flowers, beads or a bow made of crochet, plastic, suede leather etc to give cuteness to the hat.
  • You can put fur edging or tassels to give a different touch.

Remember: do not over accessorise it. This takes away the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegant simplicity!!
