2 Layer Twisted Hat

A customer had approached me to get a contrast winter hat for herself; something to go with her black-white checkered winter coat. Her other criteria were something that looks chic, sombre and professional. We are talking an accessory here. It wouldn’t be justified if it isn’t different from the usual pattern like textured.

She later requested for a pair of winter gloves to go with the hat too. This basically meant that I had to look at a hat-gloves combo that would match with her winter coat. After I decided on the colour, I prepared a pair of Texting Gloves for her.

I thank to free patterns from Do the Twist Hat – Yarnspirations. I loved the pattern. It was a right tick in the check box; elegant yet stylish beanie. I followed the pattern with a few modifications to increase the height to 8-9″ from bottom to top of the hat. As per the pattern, the size is suitable for teens, while the requirement was for an adult woman.

Process:

This hat is divided into 4 sections. You need to take a bottom-top approach.

  1. The first part involves preparing the ribbed band for the base depending on the size of the head.
  2. The second part includes 1 FPDC and 9 BPDC.
  3. The 3rd part is the continuation with 6 FPDC, 6 BPDC each.
  4. And the last part is same as per the pattern provided. I did not add any pom-pom to give it a more professional look.

I call this crochet hat as a 2 Layer Twisted Hat as the pattern is repeated twice, to give a look of 2 layers. The twisted look is because of the rows of FPDC and BPDC.

Ribbed Band:-

R1: chain 13

R2: Single Crochet (SC)  from the 2nd chain. total 12 sc.

R3: SC in back loops only (SCBLO)

Continue R3 till the size is nearly 18″. Join the band using Slip stitch (SS). Do not cut the yarn. Total rows – 80.

Note: The ribbed count should be multiples of 10 and the rows ended in an even number.

Twisted Hat:-

R1: With the same yarn Chain 2 and continue making Double Crochet on the sides of each of the SC. Total- 80 DC.

R2: Ch 2 (chain 2 do not count). *1 FPDC on 1st DC. 9  BPDC on next 9 DC*. Continue to the end of the row and join at 1st FPDC. Total FPDC – 10, BPDC – 70.

R3: Ch 2, *1 FPDC in next 2 stitches (ST), 1 BPDC on next 8 ST*. Continue to the end of the row. Join at 1st FPDC. Total FPDC – 20, BPDC – 80.

R4: Ch 2, *1 FPDC in next 3 ST, 1 BPDC on next 7 ST*. Continue to the end of the row. Join at 1st FPDC. Total FPDC – 30, BPDC – 70.

R5: Ch 2, *1 FPDC in next 4 ST, 1 BPDC on next 6 ST*. Continue to the end of the row. Join at 1st FPDC. Total FPDC – 40, BPDC – 60.

R6: Ch 2, *1 FPDC in next 5 ST, 1 BPDC on next 5 ST*. Continue to the end of the row. Join at 1st FPDC. Total FPDC – 50, BPDC – 50.

R7: Ch 2, 1 BPDC in next 1 ST, *1 FPDC in next 5 ST, 1 BPDC in next 5 ST*, Continue till the last 9 ST left. 1 FPDC in next 5 ST, 1 BPDC in next 4 ST. Join at 1st BPDC. Total FPDC – 50, BPDC – 50.

R8: Ch 2, 1 BPDC in next 2 ST, *1 FPDC in next 5 ST, 1 BPDC in next 5 ST*, Continue till the last 8 ST left. 1 FPDC in next 5 ST, 1 BPDC in next 3 ST. Join at 1st BPDC. Total FPDC – 50, BPDC – 50.

R9: Ch 2, 1 BPDC in next 3 ST, *1 FPDC in next 5 ST, 1 BPDC in next 5 ST*, Continue till the last 7 ST left. 1 FPDC in next 5 ST, 1 BPDC in next 2 ST. Join at 1st BPDC. Total FPDC – 50, BPDC – 50.

R10: Ch 2, 1 BPDC in next 4 ST, *1 FPDC in next 5 ST, 1 BPDC in next 5 ST*, Continue till the last 6 ST left. 1 FPDC in next 5 ST, 1 BPDC in next 1 ST. Join at 1st BPDC. Total FPDC – 50, BPDC – 50.

R11: Ch 2, *1 FPDC in next 5 ST, 1 BPDC on next 5 ST*. Continue to the end of the row. Join at 1st FPDC. Total FPDC – 50, BPDC – 50.

Repeat R2-R11 depending on the height of the hat.

**Remember: Measure the height of the hat including the band. If the height is nearly 6″-6.5″, you can proceed to reduce the number stitches for the crown. I decided to continue one more round, which is why the hat is named as the 2-layer twisted.

Reducing the ST count for the crown.

(depending on the layers that you have added, the next row will start either at R12 or R22)

R22: Ch 2, *1 FPDC in next ST, skip next ST, 1 BPDC in next 8 ST*. Continue to the end of the row. Join at 1st FPDC. Total 72 ST.

R23: Ch 2, *1 FPDC in next 2 ST, skip next ST, 1 BPDC in next 6 ST*. Continue to the end of the row. Join at 1st FPDC. Total 64 ST.

R25: Ch 2, *1 FPDC in next 3 ST, skip next ST, 1 BPDC in next 4 ST*. Continue to the end of the row. Join at 1st FPDC. Total 56 ST.

R26: Ch 2, *1 FPDC in next 4 ST, skip next ST, 1 BPDC in next 2 ST*. Continue to the end of the row. Join at 1st FPDC. Total 48 ST.

R27: Ch 2, *1 FPDC in next 4 ST, skip next ST, 1 BPDC in next ST*. Continue to the end of the row. Join at 1st BPDC. Total 40 ST.

R28: Ch 2, 1 BPDC in next 1 ST, *1 FPDC in next 3 ST, skip next ST, 1 BPDC in next ST*. Continue till the last 4 ST left. 1 FPDC in next 3 ST, Skip next ST. Join at 1st BPDC. Total 32 ST.

R29: Ch 2, 1 BPDC in next 1 ST, *1 FPDC in next 2 ST, skip next ST, 1 BPDC in next ST*. Continue till the last 3 ST left. 1 FPDC in next 2 ST, Skip next ST. Join at 1st BPDC. Total 24 ST.

R30: Join and sew the top of the hat to close the gap.

Caution Section:-

  1. The thickness and elasticity of the yarn and the chosen crochet hook determines the Lacey effects.
  2. Also, your technique impacts the smoothness or finished look. Everyone has different technique ranging from tight stitching style to medium to loose stitching styles.
  3. Depending on points 1-2, your number of counts for the ribbed band and Twist layering will differ.
  4. Measuring the circumference and height of the hat to avoid surprises and rework.
  5. FPDC and BPDC usually require either loose stitch technique or bigger crochet hook to maintain the fineness and seamless flow throughout the hat.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Height of the hat: 9″
  • Circumference: 23″

The sizes could be altered based on the count of the stitches for the rows.

Optional Alterations:-

  • You can increase the base diameter to give a more slouchy feel. Also, increase the height of the beanie.
  • You can add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pom-pom.
  • You can attach flowers, beads or a bow made of crochet, plastic, suede leather etc to give cuteness to the hat.
  • Try to use fur edging or tassels to give a different touch.
  • Rather than 1 yarn colour, you can have a base colour and contrast colour fusion to make this hat.
    • I will suggest that a base colour hat with one row of edging and pom-pom of the contrast colour.
    • With Pink yarn as base colour; Cream, White, shades of Brown will give a different taste and maintain the same elegance.

Remember: do not over accessorise it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegance simplicity!!
