Striped Pencil Bookmark

A weekend spent in the lap of woods, connecting with nature and enjoying the beauty of mother earth; there is nothing more psychotherapeutic than this. A walk in the park, surrounded by trees, streams or creeks, and birds animals, is also emotionally purging than working out in a gym, which focuses only on our body.

One of our usual activity is walking in the park. I am fortunate that San Antonio Parks and Recreation Authority has created and maintained so many parks all across the city. While enjoying the Salado Creek I recorded this interesting sound of the birds and the owls. I tried to look for bird’s nest but couldn’t spot any in this dense forest.

I deeply enjoyed the sound of chirping. Suddenly, I struck with the idea of holding a contest. Listen to the sounds that the birds make to communicate among themselves and imagine if they are talking like humans. I loved the participation of the contestants. The responses were entertaining. A couple of them got excited and responded more than once.

Below is the video of the contest that I posted on the Facebook page: theknotmydesigns. You all are welcome to post your conversation too!!! The participation is every lasting!!!

P.S. For your active participation, you will be eligible for free gift i.e. A pencil bookmark from Knot My Designs!!!

The conversation contest: Translate the conversation

In order to thank them for their active participation, I designed Thank You Cards for them and gifted a Pencil bookmark. Below is the striped pencil bookmark. Since I believe in to learn and teach mantra ->

“Padho Aur Padhao”

It was another attempt for my fellow participants to buy books and read more.

Process:

The pattern is stripped which involves one base colour (BC) and another contrasting colour (CC). I have mainly worked on the CC-2BC-CC-2BC-CC-2BC-CC pattern using Single Crochet (SC). There are a couple of pencil designs having 3BC-CC-3BC-CC-3BC and BC-2CC-2BC-2CC-2BC-CC. The pencil cone contains BC as the skin and the tip with CC.

Pattern:- CC-2BC-CC-2BC-CC-2BC-CC

Pencil Length:-

R1: Starting with Base colour (BC), Chain 30+1. SC from 2nd hook. Ch 1 and turn. Total 30 SC.

R2: With BC, SC in every SC. Change to CC and Ch 1 and turn. Total 30 SC.

R3: With CC, SC in every SC. Change to BC and Ch 1 and turn. Total 30 SC.

Continue SC in every row, Ch 1 and turn.

Follow the sequence of 2BC-CC-2BC-CC-2BC. With CC, SC around to form a border of. 3 SC in the corner SC to form a clear rectangular edge.

Pick one side and start working on the pencil base cone and the tip.

Base Cone and Tip:-

R1: Using BC, Ch 1 and SC 10 times. Ch 1 and turn. Total 10 SC.

R2: SCtog, 6 SC, SCtog. Ch 1 and turn. Total 8 SC.

R8: With CC, SCtog, SCtog. Ch 1 and turn. Total 2 SC.

R9: SC in every SC. Ch 1 and turn. Total 2 SC.

R10: SCtog and Slip Stitch and sew the remaining strand.

Crochet Harry Potter Hogwarts House Scarf Bookmark Free Pattern for Harry Potter Novel Series lover! - Knot My Designs

Harry Potter Series in the library - Knot My Designs

If you are looking for a complete collection of Harry Potter Series, you can go to a bookstore or just visit any book over; a fiction lover or a fantasy lover that you know and you will find it all in their library or collections.

When an ardent Harry Potter fan asked me to make a creative bookmark to adorn the collection, I decided to surprise them with Hogwarts House scarves as Bookmarks!

If you are familiar with Harry Potter Series, there are 4 houses in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry – Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherin.

Gryffindor has a lion as the symbol and it stands for bravery, daring, nerve, and chivalry. The house colours are deep red and gold.

Hufflepuff has a badger as the symbol depicting loyalty, hard working, dedication, honesty, and tolerance. The house colours are yellow and black.

Ravenclaw has an eagle in its logo and it values wit, creativity, and wisdom. The house colours are blue and bronze.

Slytherin has a serpent as the symbol that represents ambition, cleverness, cunning, resourcefulness, and pure blood heritage. The house colours are green and silver.

Info Credit: Harry Potter Wiki

Process:

5 Little Monsters – Hogwarts Scarf bookmarks helped me to complete Hogwarts House Scarf Bookmark. They are made using 2 patterns as mentioned by Erica in 5 Little Monsters – A thick striped version and a thin striped version.

For Gryffindor, I used yellow and red colours and thick striped version. Unfortunately, the gold cotton yarn wasn’t available at that time.

For Hufflepuff, I used yellow and black colours and thick striped version.

For Ravenclaw, I used blue and bronze colours and thin striped version. The metallic bronze yarn thickness is different, thus I used 2 rows for 1 as per the instructions.

For Slytherin, I used green and grey colours and thin striped version. The silver yarn wasn’t available for me.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Length: 8″
  • Width: 1.5″

Optional Alterations:-

  • The sizes can be changed based on your requirement.
  • You can give a defined edging.
  • The edging can be made of Single Crochet (SC), Crab Stitch, Slip Stitch, Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC).
  • You can add tassels like the Harry Potter 1. Follow the link to make mini tassels.
  • Instead of regular yarn, fur yarn will bring out a pop to the border.
  • Instead of going for a different colour for the border, use both the base colours around for alternate rows.
    • The border shouldn’t be too broad to pop out. The purpose should be to provide a clean edge.

Remember: do not over accessorize it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegance simplicity!!

Crochet Nature Captured in Books Free Bookmark Pattern - Knot My Designs

Nature Captured in Books

“One of the oldest arguments in the history of psychology is the Nature vs Nurture debate. Each of these sides has strong points making it harder to decide whether a person’s development is predisposed in his DNA, or a majority of it is influenced by his life experiences and environment” (as mentioned in Explorable in Nature vs Nurture).

This is not just about humans but nature at large. What would have happened if the earth was without any flora or fauna?

Even though other planets look fascinating, they fail to come any closer to the Earth, which looks so beautiful and colourful with the greenery and oceans.

How about bringing the same beauty to your bookshelf, bedroom, and office?  Thanks to crochet! You don’t need to pluck flowers to bring them home; just have crochet flower and leaves as bookmarks!

Process:

  1. Leaflet Bookmark: I used the same leaf pattern that I have selected for the Christmas Wreath for Leaflet Bookmark. I am just obsessed with this leaf pattern.
  2. Sunny Petal Flower Bookmark: I liked the flower from Ravelry and made one as a bookmark. The same pattern could be used as an embellishment on hats, brackets, necklaces scarves, headband etc.
  3. Dark Rose Flower Bookmark: The complete instructional blog could be accessed from this link Dark Rose Flower.
  4. Maple Fall Bookmark: I am always inclined to Irish Crochet. I used the leftover leaf from Maple Wreath and converted into a bookmark.
  5. Bell Flower Bookmark: The pattern is in Bell Flower post.
  6. Maple Leaf Bookmark:  link is already posted.
  7. Pansy Leaf Bookmark: The complete blog could be accessed from this link for Pansy Leaf.

Daschund Dog Bookmark Crochet Free Pattern for book and pet lovers - Knot My Designs

Dachshund Dog Bookmark

I’ll post few questions below and you need to answer them as quickly as possible, without giving a second thought.

The time starts now.

  1. Do you love pets?
  2. If yes, Are you a Dog person or a Cat person?
  3. Do you love reading?
  4. If yes, Do you collect books or prefer online reading?

If you choose the 1st option in the questionnaire, then this is the perfect item for you.

Dachshund Bookmark!

WOOF! WOOF!

My friend liked my nature inspired bookmarks. She certainly qualifies all the above criteria too! When she asked me to make a bookmark for her, I certainly knew it was neither flowers nor leaves, but something different from what she could get usually around. And, what could be the better than a dog bookmark to a Dog Lover Bookworm!

Process:

I was looking a lot amigurumi but the sizes were too big for carrying as bookmarks. So I went for crochet appliques.  liked this Dachshund Applique by ONE and TWO COMPANY. I added one more ear on the other side to give a 3D look. Now instead of keeping bone separately from the dog, I linked them both with a chain.

Where’s my bone? Where’s my bone? Ah! it’s in the end of this book.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • String length: 7″
  • Dog size: 4″
  • Bone size: 1″

The sizes can be altered based on the count of the stitches for the rows.

Optional Alterations:-

  • You can add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pompom.
  • You can attach flowers, beads, tassel at the end of the bookmark
  • You can add your tag.

Remember: do not over accessorise it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegance simplicity!!

Crochet Maple Leaf Bookmark Free Pattern for Book-Lovers - Knot My Designs

Maple Leaf Bookmark

Seasons not only elucidate our choice of cloth but also define our habitat. Migration of birds, sprouting of fruits and blooming flowers are dependent on seasons. But have you considered leaves? Well, technically leaves are not dependent on seasons but the ageing of the leaf is certainly affected by it. They mature from spring through summer. In Autumn, they start ageing and acquire certain shades of brown, orange, red and yellow colour. We can label those leaves or trees as ornamental trees. When you think about any ornamental trees, your first choice is “Maple”. The outline of a maple leaf is very beautiful. Autumn season is considered to be dry and withering but due to red and orange maple leaves, I think, they are considered to be one of the most beautiful seasons. They mollify the dry and chilly weather.

Process:

Wonderstruck by the beauty of Maple, I decided to make one leaf for myself as a bookmark. I chose the maple pattern from MrsMicawber – Maple Leaf Pattern. I picked up the yarn from my stash basket and started making the leaf. However, towards the end, instead of closing the stitch, I continued making chain 60 (or as per the length of my book) to create a string. At the end, I made one tassel out of the same yarn and attached it to the string. This is my Fall Season bookmark!

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • String length: 9″
  • Maple Leaf: 2″

The sizes can be altered based on the count of the stitches for the rows.

Optional Alterations:-

  • You can add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pompom.
  • You can attach flowers, beads, tassel at the end of the bookmark
  • You can add your tag.

Remember: do not over accessorise it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegance simplicity!!

Crochet Green Pansy Leaf Bookmark Free Pattern for Book Lovers - Knot My Designs

Pansy Leaf Bookmark

Every product that I create, I treat as my project.

A Project in IT world, includes a plan, an estimate, and a forecast. Being an IT employee, these fundamental points have gotten into my habit, and hence in every work I do, be it professional, hobby or any passion-driven. And moreover, these products or creative items also have a defined timeline, like any project.

The best part is, it gives me a sense of accomplishment when I complete them, within the defined timeline. I do rework on them if I am not happy with the final outcome. I consider blankets, shrug, placemats, floor mats, and my other previous works, as big projects since they take days (even weeks) to complete. And I pick up small items that could be prepared within hours, to get a break from working on complicated, challenging or big projects. Leaves, flowers, bracelets, bookmarks and places are examples of these easy projects that require at utmost 1-2 hours to complete.

I liked Pansy leaf pattern and I chose to make this Pansy leaf bookmark for my another book.

Process:

I took the leaf pattern from LookWhatIMade – Pansy Leaf Pattern but increased the initial chain count to 13 as my wool was of fine quality.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Leaf size: 3″
  • String length: 7″

You can alter the sizes based on the total count of the stitches for the rows.

Optional Alterations:-

Crochet Bell Flower Bookmark Free Pattern for Book-Lovers - Knot My Designs

Bell Flower Bookmark

Sitting idle for some time gave me the craving to make small objects that I can complete quickly within hours and also feel good that I achieved something at the end of the day. It influenced me to crochet few small items.

Though big projects are always exciting and the end product displays all of the hard work, dedication, and love that has been put onto that. But sometimes you are looking to make something that is easy to make and also looks graceful.

Bookmarks are always easy to create. Knowing my necessity and inclination towards bookmarks, I opted for crocheting a flower which will serve as a bookmark too.

Process:

I started browsing for different flower patterns. Especially, the ones that I have been planning to work on. After a long search, I came across a bell-flower pattern given in Mazkwok – Blue Bell Flower. I chose my bell-flower as white with dark green sepals and dark brown stamen and stem.

I followed the pattern for flower and sepals as mentioned on the blog. For stamen and stem, I made a chain 60+ and single crochet from 2nd chain to the starting chain. I pulled the stem into the flower to make stamen. Sew sepals, flower, and stem together.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • String length: 9″
  • Flower circumference: 3″
