This N That Sunglasses Cover

By now, your brain must have properly registered that we always go to the centre point in designing. Too many embellishments are overdone. Be it in fashion, interior decoration, art, designing etc. Keeping it simple and minimal is the modern mantra!

Bored with the same old plain black Bulky sunglasses cover, the customer asked me for a funky, colourful and bright cover. Something which was sturdy to hold the sunglasses and stylish to carry along. So, I chose a bright funky cotton yarn ombre and decided to follow a simple basic pattern. Voila! I achieved that.

Process:

The procedure to make this pouch is very simple. To give a closer stitch look, I have used a smaller crochet hook than what is generally recommended to make this sunglasses cover. The design is alternate Single Crochet Back Loop only (SCBLO) and Single Crochet Front Loop Only (SFLO).

R 1: Ch 11, Single Crochet (SC) in the 2nd ch from the hook, SC in each remaining ch to end; turn. (10 sts)
R 2 – 3: Ch 1, SC in each st across; turn. (10 sts)
R 4: Ch 1, SC in 10 sts across, SC 3 along the side, SC 10 across the foundation chain, SC 3 on the other side; join with a Sl st in first SC of the round, do not turn. (26 sts).

R 5: SCBLO, SCFLO around 26 stitches.  Continue this step until you reach the desired length of the cover.

R 6: Reverse Single Crochet/ Crab Stitch around to give that finishing touch to the edge.

You can create the edging with one round of SC only. It all depends on what kind of finishing look you prefer.

Brim with side loop:-

R1: Change the yarn to white and Chain 2; Double Crochet (DC) around; join at the beginning of the row.

R2: Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC) and Double Crochet alternatively around till the brim is 1″.

  • in the last row add a chain 3 in the end and join at the beginning of the row.

R3: Finish off with Reverse single crochet stitch or crab stitch to give a fine edging; Single Crochet in the ch 3 space; join at the beginning.

Brim without side loop:-

R1: Double crochet around with white yarn.

R2: Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC) and Double Crochet alternatively around till the brim is 1″.

R3: Finish off with Reverse single crochet stitch or crab stitch to give a fine edging.

Crochet Wristlet: Chain 60-70 based on the wristlet length. Sew the ends in the inside of the pouch.

Caution Section:-

  1. The selection of the yarn is important. The thickness and elasticity of the yarn and the chosen crochet hook determines the design.
  2. Also, your technique impacts the smoothness or finished look. Everyone has different technique ranging from tight stitching style to medium to loose stitching styles.
  3. In case, you are unable to get the required chosen coloured yarn of same thickness, you can change the crochet hook and your technique as you go around, to get the seamless look. For me, I chose crochet hook smaller than recommended one to give a tighter and closer stitch.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Height: 6.5″
  • Width: 3″

The sizes can be altered based on the total count of the stitches for the rows.

Optional Alterations:-

  • The side loop can be used to add any wristlet, strap made of suede leather, crochet, resin etc.
  • The buttoned loop can be switched to magnet button, snap-on button, press button, zip or an open pouch.
    • Depending on the tool, leave enough height for closure and mobile.
  • You can add additional hook or charms or keychains in the side loop along with the strap.

Remember: do not over accessorise it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegance simplicity!!

Style Aisle:

  • Hang inside/outside your purse as a go-to pouch for mobile and cards.
  • Add a keychain to the wristlet hole to add your keys along with phone and cards.
  • Use long sling instead of wristlet to carry as a compact pouch on the go OR simply treat as a cell phone case without any handles.
  • Choose the yarn colour based on the palette in your wardrobe. Experiment and enjoy the beautiful colours.
  • Go creative with the button choice.

Materials:

  1. Yarn: Lily Sugar’N Cream – Calico
  2. Crochet Hook: 4.5 mm
  3. Needles
  4. Scissors
  5. Measuring Tape
  6. Stitch Marker: My stitch markers are the mini safety pins we get from clothing tags.
  • Note: Feel free to play around with different branded yarns. They should give the consistent flow of the pattern using a constant number crochet hook.
  • Either go for the yarns with the same recommended crochet hook OR choose the yarn and change the crochet hooks along as you proceed with the pattern. This might be tricky for beginners.

Happy Crocheting!!!
