Crochet StemCell Throw / Blanket / Afghan Free Pattern - Knot My Designs

StemCell Throw

Maroon and brown colour palettes; even though they are acknowledged as dark colours; when combined with white give a soothing pastel shade. I was drawn to this unique set and was looking forward to creating something that is unisex and ideal for any home with any furniture colour. Thus, I created this unisex throw that could be matched with any dark colour, taupe, brown, red, white coloured furniture. The close stitch gives more warmth than Autumn Lapghan, my first blanket for my home.

Process:

I liked the simple single colour pattern Crochet Lap Afghan, (Crochet Lap Afghan – picture) and decided to blend my chosen palette in this design. The design contains Double Crochet (DC), Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC), Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC), Single Crochet (SC).

Info: The pattern does not exist in the provided website, so I’m writing it out.

Pattern:-

R1: Chain 151, DC from the 3rd chain, DC across. Turn. Total 147 DC.

R2: Ch 2, FPDC in each DC, Turn. Total 147 FPDC.

R3: Ch 2, BPDC in FPDC. Turn. Total 147 BPDC.

R4: Ch 2, FPDC in BPDC. Turn. Total 147 FPDC.

R5: Ch 2, DC in FPDC. Turn. Total 147 DC.

The pattern gets divided into 2 sections:-

Interior:-

Since I wanted my throw bigger than the projected size of the pattern, I started with 151 chains.

  • Using skin brown colour yarn, I copied the rows (1-5) 3times.
  • After 5th row, I changed the colour to dark maroon and repeated the rows (1-5) 3 times.
  • A batch could be described as R1-R5 repeated 3 times.
  • With alternate yarn colours for every batch, I repeated the process up to a total of 4 times.

Border:-

For borders, I used white yarn. Instead of Single crochet (SC) stitch, I used Double Crochet (DC) stitch and mirrored the steps provided in the pattern.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Length: 60″
  • Width: 41″

Optional Alterations:-

  • The sizes can be changed based on your requirement.
  • The edging can be made of Single Crochet (SC), Crab Stitch, Slip Stitch, Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC).
  • Instead of regular yarn, fur yarn will bring out a pop to the border.
  • Instead of going for 3rd colour for the border, use both the base colours around for alternate rows.
    • The border shouldn’t be too broad to pop out. The purpose should be to provide a clean edge.
  • You can add pom-pom or tassels (matching the colour with the edging or the base colour) at the 4 corners. Link to make pom-pom and tassels.
  • Avoid the border and just add tassels/pompoms made of a mixture of the base colours.
  • You can attach flowers, beads, appliques or a bow made of crochet, plastic, suede leather, fabric etc to make it more interesting.

Remember: do not over accessorise it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegance simplicity!!

Style Aisle:

  • Choose the yarn colour matching with your sofa or cushions.
  • Go crazy with experimental contrast colours with your furniture to pop out a section. Make sure the interiors are mostly containing natural, neutral or earthy colours around.
  • The whole blanket can be made with one single colour yarn to soothe the interior.
  • For the stitches or pattern to be visible clearly, choose lighter shades of yarn.
  • Instead of going for 3rd colour for the border, use both the base colours around for alternate rows.
    • The border shouldn’t be too broad to pop out. The purpose should be to provide a clean edge.

Materials:

  1. Yarn: Vardhamaan Maroon, Vardhamaan Taupe, Vardhamaan White.
    • Note: you can play around with different branded yarns as far as they give the synchronous flow of the pattern using a constant crochet hook.
    • You can either go for the yarns with the same recommended crochet hook OR decide the yarn and change the crochet hooks along with the tightness on the crochet stitches as you proceed with the pattern.
    • You can change the pattern to get the continuous flow.
  2. Crochet Hook: 6mm
  3. Needles
  4. Scissors
  5. Measuring Tape
  6. Stitch Marker: My stitch markers are the mini safety pins we get from clothing tags.

Happy Crocheting!!!
