Winter/Fall Seasoned Crochet Ribbed Moss Hat Free Pattern for an adult woman - Knot My Designs

Ribbed Moss Hat

I had a lot of brown wool lying in my stash bag. My main motive was to clear of the bag so that I can buy more and more yarn. But the challenge was to proceed with an attractive item creation by utilizing all the brown wool.I did require a beanie or a hat for myself, but what do I do with so much brown yarn? I was just thinking about it while looking out of the window.

Lost in thoughts of my work, I realised I need a beanie or a hat for myself, but what do I do with so much of the brown yarn, currently consuming the space?

The fall season has started and I realised that the season is all about shades of Orange, Brown, and Yellow!  Something like below that you see; and that inspired me to make a hat with brown and orange yarn colours.

Fall google

Process:

I thank meladoras creations for helping me with the Moss stitch pattern. Candy, the creator of Meladoras Creation has provided a lot of blogs with different patterns for free!!

This hat takes a bottom to top approach. Pompom is added separately using pom-pom maker. I started using them since they gifted to me. You can also follow various other methods, where you can make a pom-pom using this online link.

The hat contains 2 parts: a Ribbed edge and a Moss stitch body.

  1. I started with 1 strand of orange and brown yarn each for the ribbed pattern. Alternate Front Post Double Crochet Stitch and Double Crochet stitches are there to make the ribbed edge.
  2. For the body, I joined 2 strands of the orange yarn and used the Moss Stitch to complete the hat.

With a bit of twist and turn involved while making this hat, I created a different variety in Moss Stitch. I name this crochet free pattern ribbed hat as  Ribbed Moss Hat. This is a professional and stylish winter wear collection for any adult woman.

Ribbed Edge:-

R1: (using 1 strand of brown and orange each), Chain multiples of 10. Here, I chained up to 70, joined at the initial chain. Ch 2 (does not count), Double Crochet (DC) in each chain. Total 70 DC.

R2: Ch 2, FPDC in 1st Stitch (ST), BPDC in next ST, FPDC in next ST, continue to the end of the row. Join at the 1 FPDC. Total 35 FPDC, 35 BPDC.

Repeat R2 to get the edge height to 2.5″.

 Moss Stitch Body:-

1: (using 2 strands of orange colour), work on Moss Stitch¹, to get the height around 3″-3.5″. Total 35 SC, 35 Ch-1 space.

Note: you can increase or decrease the number of rows depending on your choice of hat size.

2: decrease the total counts to form the crown.

R1: Ch 1, SC in CH 1 space, Ch 1 for 9 times, SCtog on (ch- 1 space, SC, ch-1 space)*, Continue until the end of the row. Join at the next ST after the 1st CH 1.

Repeat R1 7 times or until the number of stitches left are 10 in the row. Sew the rest to close the top.

Note: This calculation might be tricky. sometimes the crown size is squished a lot than actually assumed. Thus keep measuring the hat size, and the circumference. If you think the crown is getting much smaller in 4 rows then rework and add another inch of Moss stitch body.

You can add pom-pom at the top of the hat.

[ ¹Moss Stitch:

1: Ch 2, Single Crochet(SC), Chain(CH) 1, Skip next Stitch(ST).Continue until the end. Join at the Ch 2 with SL ST.

2: Ch 1, SC in ch-1 space, Ch 1. Continue until the end. Join at the 1st SC with SL ST.

Repeat 1-2 alternatively.]

Caution Section:-

  • The thickness and elasticity of the yarn and the chosen crochet hook determines the Lacey effects.
  • Also, your technique impacts the smoothness or finished look. Everyone has different technique ranging from tight stitching style to medium to loose stitching styles.
  • Depending on points 1-2, your number of counts for the ribbed band and Twist layering will differ.
  • Measuring the circumference and height of the hat to avoid surprises and rework.
  • FPDC and BPDC usually require either loose stitch technique or bigger crochet hook to maintain the fineness and seamless flow throughout the hat.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Height of the hat: 8″
  • Circumference: 23″

The sizes could be altered based on the count of the stitches for the rows.

Optional Alterations:-

  • You can increase the base diameter to give a more slouchy feel. Also, increase the height of the beanie.
  • You can add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pom-pom.
  • You can attach flowers, beads or a bow made of crochet, plastic, suede leather etc to give cuteness to the hat.
  • You can put fur edging or tassels to give a different touch.

Remember: do not over accessorize it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegance simplicity!!
