Crochet Minion Theme Earflap Hat Free Pattern for toddler - Knot My Designs

Minion Theme

Though the Minions in Despicable Me or Minions are servants of favourite or looking for a leader (Scarlet Overkill), they are the cutest animated creations I have ever seen.

I do not deny my favouritism, likeliness, or craziness for Minions. Gru, Scarlet Overkill, Margo, Edith, and Agnes are interesting characters but it is these tiny minions that took the world by their cute stupid brainless actions. There are many different charactered minions too.

I wanted to make a minion theme based for my nephew. Kevin, the minion, is my final selection for the earflap hat. I made an earflap hat of a toddler age for my nephew.

For myself (since I’m such a huge fan myself), I chose Kohl container.

Process:

Minion Earflap Hat:-

Repeat Crafter Me By Sarah had this easy-to-follow pattern. There are some issues with the link now. I’m not able to provide the correct link. Well. the pattern is a basic earflap pattern. For edging and string, I used the blue yarn, sew black yarn to form lips and strings of hair, created an eye using black, brown, white and grey yarn in rounds.

The pattern contains 5 parts:

  1. Body
  2. Earflap
  3. Edging
  4. Eyes
  5. Final stitch

Body:-

(Please note: I make slightly tight stitches. Thus my total number of counts may increase than compared to others.)

R1:(Base colour) Magic Circle, Ch 2, 8 HDC, join with Slip Stitch (ST SL) in the 1st HDC. Total: 8 HDC.

R2: Ch 2, 2HDC in every HDC, join with ST SL in the 1st HDC. Total: 16 HDC.

R3: Ch 2, HDC in same HDC, 2HDC in next HDC, HDC in next HDC; repeat ; join with ST SL in the 1st HDC. Total: 24 HDC.

R4: Ch 2, HDC in same HDC, 2HDC in next HDC, HDC in next 2 HDC; repeat ; join with ST SL in the 1st HDC. Total: 32 HDC.

R5: Ch 2, HDC in same HDC, 2HDC in next HDC, HDC in next 3 HDC; repeat ; join with ST SL in the 1st HDC. Total: 40 HDC.

R6: Ch 2, HDC in same HDC, 2HDC in next HDC, HDC in next 4 HDC; repeat ; join with ST SL in the 1st HDC. Total: 48 HDC.

R7: Ch 2, HDC in same HDC, 2HDC in next HDC, HDC in next 5 HDC; repeat ; join with ST SL in the 1st HDC. Total: 56 HDC.

Please check the diameter of the crown. If it ranges from 5.75″ to 6″, stop there and continue with the formation of the football design.

R8: Ch 2, HDC in same HDC, 2HDC in next HDC, HDC in next 6 HDC; repeat ; join with ST SL in the 1st HDC. Total: 64 HDC.

R10- R14: (Using black yarn) Ch 2, HDC in same HDC, join with ST SL in the 1st HDC. Total: 64 HDC.

R14-R18: Ch 2, HDC in same HDC, join with ST SL in the 1st HDC. Total: 64 HDC.

EarFlap:-

R1: Ch 1, 8 HDC in next HDC. Turn. Total: 8 HDC.

R2: Ch 1, HDC2Together(HDC2Tog), 4 HDC, (HDC2Tog). Turn. Total: 6HDC.

R3: Ch 1, HDC in every HDC. Turn. Total 6 HDC.

R4: Ch 1, HDC2Together(HDC2Tog), 2 HDC, (HDC2Tog). Turn. Total: 4HDC.

R5: Ch 1, HDC in every HDC. Turn. Total 4 HDC.

For other Earflap, skip 24 HDC, make another earflap.

To make the earflaps (i.e. 8 HDC decrease down to 4 HDC), we need to calculate the placement of the ear-flaps.

Gap between 2 earflaps = {Total count(multiples of 8) - 16( 2 earflaps base size)}/2.

For e.g.: (64-16)/2 = 24 count gap between 2 earflaps of 8 HDC.

Edging:-

Single Crochet (SC) around to make a fine edge using Blue Colour yarn.

Eyes:-

You can 2 or 1 based on the specific minion that you choose. I chose Kevin so I made one eye.

R1: (Using Black yarn) Starting with a Magic Circle, Ch1, SC 6; join at the beginning SC with an SL ST. Total 6 SC.

R2: Ch 1, 2 SC in every SC; Join at the beginning SC with an SL ST. Total 12 SC.

R3: (Changing to White Yarn) Ch 1, SC in SC, 2 SC in next SC; repeat , join at the beginning SC with an SL ST. Total 18 SC.

R4: Ch 1, SC in 2 SC, 2 SC in next SC; repeat , join at the beginning SC with an SL ST. Total 24 SC.

R5: Ch 1, SC in 3 SC, 2 SC in next SC; repeat , join at the beginning SC with an SL ST. Total 30 SC.

R6: (Changing to Grey Yarn) Ch 1, SC in 4 SC, 2 SC in next SC; repeat , join at the beginning SC with an SL ST. Total 36 SC.

Final Stitch:-

Sew the Eye on the black band. Stitch and form the smiley lip.

Cut 4 pieces of 12″ blue colour yarn Using 2 yarn together make a chain of 12+. Attach the same blue colour yarn tassels.

Knot few small strands of black yarn on the top (small section) of the hat at random places to form hair of the minions.

Minion Pencil/Kohl Pouch:-

I made Kohl case for myself using PetalsToPicots – Pencil Case from Petals To Picots. It is was a great DIY craft for me. It could be used as pencil-case too.
