Christmas Wreath

Do you wanna build a snowman?
Come on let’s go and play
I never see you anymore
Come out the door
It’s like you’ve gone away…

Wintertime and the famous song from FROZEN. All you need is a hot Cocoa and tuck yourself in a warm blanket.

Merry Christmas!!

Christmas is here, and so the time for big holiday plans, decorating the fir-tree, buying gifts,  preparing a long list of wishes for Santa and waiting for the gifts!!!

As a pleasant surprise, my client who had liked my Halloween wreath asked me to make a similar one for the Christmas.

Process:

There are 2-3 DIY activities included here.

  1. crochet leaves.
  2. collect pine cones from the ground.
  3. clean pine cones.
  4. assemble all.

Crochet Leaves:-

I liked the leaf structure designed in MyPicot. Irish Crochet is very intricate and attractive. I used 2 different shades of leaves to give a natural look. Total of 30 leaves is made out of both the yarns with 15 leaves from each.

Unfortunately,  My Picot has removed the link. I have provided detailed step-by-step instructions below. Meanwhile, you can use the below link to make the leaves. The instructions are similar to Christmas leaves that I made.

I have worked on the Back loop to give an elevated effect. To access the written instructions, scroll down to LEAVES section.

Collect Pine Cones from the ground:-

Since Pine trees surround my area, it was in abundance. I collected a few similar sized pines. It was a good hunt walking around the area in search of pinecones!

Clean Pine Cones:-

I cleaned them by using this method.  And bought the wire wreath, two green shades of yarn representing different colours of leaves, pliers and green paddle wire from Jo-Ann. And the ‘Christmas Wreath’ was ready!

Assemble All:-

  • Bought the wire wreath, pliers and green paddle wire from Jo-Ann.
  • Two green shades of yarn representing different colours of leaves.

And the ‘Christmas Wreath’ was ready!

LEAVES:-

R1: Chain 8.

R2: Single Crochet (SC) from the 2nd loop on the foundation chain (FC); SC across till the end of the FC; Chain 4; (You will be at to the bottom side of the FC or the 1st chain after the knot). SC on the other side of the FC; SC on every stitch except last 2 stitches; Skip the last 2 stitches and turn.

Chain 4 will be in the middle of the 1st row. From now work on the back Loops only (BLO).

R3: Ch 1; on BLO- 5 SC, in ch-4 space (2 SC, CH 4, 2 SC), 5 SC on another side, skip last 2 stitches and turn.

The turning point should be at the same level as its opposite side.

R4: Ch 1; on BLO- 7 SC, ch-4 space (2 SC, CH 4, 2 SC), 5 SC on the other side, skip last 2 stitches and turn.

R5: Ch 1; on BLO – 7 SC, ch-4 space (2 SC, CH 4, 2 SC), 5 SC on the other side, skip last 2 stitches and turn.

Slip stitch and tie and cut the yarn. Sew in the leftover yarn.

Repeat two more rounds if you want to increase the length of the leaf.

Caution Section:-

  • Make sure you are working around the foundation chain to form the leaf.
  • Work on Back loop only to give a different effect.
  • You can increase or decrease the leaf size by repeating the rows or stopping before.
  • I have used 30 leaves to create a fuller wreath. Decrease the total count of leaves to 15 or less to make a different kind of open wreath.
  • If you are including cones and other embellishments, then you need paddled wire.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Wire Wreath Frame size: 12″
  • Christmas leaves length: 5″-6″

Optional Alterations:-

  • You can include some brown leaves too.
  • Work on both the loops to create different leaves out of same yarn.
  • Make a snow-leave wreath by using white and taupe shaded yarn. Paint the cone in white to get the snowy effect.
  • More pine cones can be added too.
  • Check out the nearby stores for more decoration ornaments.
  • You can use paddle wire to fix your leaves to the wreath frame or sew them from behind.

Remember: do not over accessorise it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegance simplicity!!
