Asymmetrical Boxed Pillow

SHAPES !

Anything that defines a physical boundary is a shape. The shapes are either 2 Dimensional (2D) or 3 Dimensional (3D). They are also specified as geometric or non-geometric. You can also view them as symmetrical or asymmetrical.

SHAPE is one of the fundamentals or the key elements in interior designing, apart from texture, colour, line, form, and space. Though symmetrical shapes are pleasing to the eye because of the defined pattern or structure, asymmetrical shapes have come into vogue, since the non-defined design creates a tension, thus grabbing more attention. And when bringing this concept of Art into your home, you capture focus by bringing two unpleasant or incomplete shapes into a perfect one.

Interestingly, my inspiration behind creating a symmetrical shape with an asymmetric design came from my mistake. I got determined to make a crochet tote bag for myself using yellow and grey colour yarns. A contemporary coloured bag representing modish look. The bag turned out too big for my size. I could have either defined the dimension using a cloth and followed the pattern or could have started making it, and halted only when I felt that the size was good enough for me. The pattern came out beautifully and I didn’t want to undo it. After thinking deeply for a few days, I came up with an idea of converting into a Pillow.

Process:

I made a lot of changes in this pattern. Instead of following the defined dimensions of the rectangle, I increased the size by 1/3rd. I used 5.5mm crochet hook for cotton yarn. I used Half Double Crochet (HDC),

I used Half Double Crochet (HDC), instead of Single Crochet (SC), to form a Knit style look when working in rows. To cover the 4th side, I was juggling between using the same colours or a completely different one. I chose white cotton yarn and created a square shape with same chain count as the above rectangle. I used the same pattern and finally delivered this Boxed Pillow.

Since this pattern emerged from a series of mistakes, the procedure can easily be divided into 2 parts;

  1. Tote Bag Formation
  2. Covering Square

Tote Bag Formation:-

Make a rectangle shape.

R1: Chain + 2  to get a 15″ line. turn. ( I do not remember the actual count.)

R2: Half Double Crochet (HDC) across from 2nd chain. turn.

R3: HDC in the 3rd Loop of HDC as shown in a Knit style look when working in rows.

R4: HDC in the Back Loop only as shown in a Knit style look when working in rows.

Follow the process until you get the desired length. The length should be 3times the width. Here the width is 15″, length will be 45″.

Finishing:-

  • Fold the Rectangle as per the design. Use this link – crochet tote bag for myself to sew the bag.
  • One side will have more yellow than grey when you fold it. Sew that side with yellow yarn using simple joining method. Sew Yellow with Yellow.
  • Another side will have a majority of grey colour popping out. Sew this other side with grey yarn using same simple joining procedure. Sew Gray with Gray.

Covering Square:-

R1: Chain + 2  to get a 20″ line. turn.

R2: Half Double Crochet (HDC) across from 2nd chain. turn.

R3: HDC in the 3rd Loop of HDC as shown in a Knit style look when working in rows.

R4: HDC in the Back Loop only as shown in a Knit style look when working in rows.

Follow the process until you get the desired length of 20″.

Note: The calculations might be tricky to follow. Once you have made the bag, you need to calculate the length of the side unstitched. Accordingly, make the square using the same Knit Style Technique.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • The size of the Pillow cover is 22″ x 22″.

Optional Alterations:-

  • The sizes can be changed based on your requirement.
  • You can insert a zip on one side of the diagonal stitch for the washing purpose.
  • You can add tie knots sections on one side of the covering square.

Remember: do not over accessorise it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegance simplicity!!
