White Petals Flower Bookmark

Anything new always attracts us. This attraction is applicable to the kids too. Latest gadgets, new advanced toy, access to free internet draws everyone towards them. It is impossible to find any person who will deny accessing latest items.

The use of E-books, audiobooks, podcasts, videos provides lots of information. Since the accessibility, availability, portability compels us to use more, we tend to strain ourselves more than we ever realise. Whereas, if you read a physical book, you will not strain your eyes and will feel better.

Creating colourful, creative and interesting bookmarks is an attempt to push the kids to read a paper-based book instead of using tablets or smartphones. They can flash their lovely bookmarks and it will attract another kid to have one and use for their regular courses.

These bookmarks are easy to make using leftover yarns so you can gift to everyone. A creative handmade gift from you when you gift a book to someone.

Process:

I liked the Hydrangea flower pattern from Maggie Crochet and thought to make one for gifting a book along with a flower bookmark to my colleague’s daughter. The pattern confused me at certain steps so I am trying to elaborate in my style. The process looks difficult but once the written instructions are clarified it becomes simple. The instructions include Single Crochet (SC), Double Crochet (DC) and Treble Crochet (TC) stitches along with Chain (Ch) and Slip Stitch (SL ST).

The pattern can be divided into 2 parts:

  1. The Hydrangea flower
  2. The stem and the tag

Hydrangea Flower:-

The flower is formed in 2 ways. First, the base is created and then the petals are formed.

Flower Base:-

R1: Starting with a Magic Circle, Ch 1 and 6 Single Crochet (SC); join with a Sl ST to the 1st SC. Total 6 SC.

R2: Ch 3, 2 DC in the same stitch, *Ch 3, 2 DC in next SC*; repeat *-* and join at the beginning Ch 3 with the SL ST. Total 12 DC, 6 Ch-3 Space.

R3: Ch 1, SC in the same stitch and next DC, 4 SC in ch-3 space, *SC in next 2 DC, 4 SC in Ch-3 space*; repeat *-* and join at the beginning SC with the SL ST. Total 36 SC.

R4: Ch 3, DC in next SC, Ch 3, skip next SC, DC in the next 2 SC, ch 3, * 1 DC in the next 2 SC, Ch 3, skip next SC, DC in the next 2 SC, Ch 3, skip next SC*; repeat *-* throughout and join at the beginning Ch 3 with a Sl ST. Total 24 DC, 12 Ch-3 Space.

R5: Repeat R3 around. Total 72 SC. Cut the yarn and sew the strangling yarn.

To increase the base, repeat R4 and R5. R6 will contain 36 DC, 18 Ch-3 space. R7 should be 108 SC.

Petals:-

Inner Petal Layer:

Attach the yarn around the base of the 1st DC of R2 from flower base with the SL ST.

R1: Attach the yarn around the base of the 1st DC of R2 from flower base with the SL ST. The 2nd round of base contains 12 DC. We will be working on these 12 DC posts to form the petals. 2 DC will be used to form one petal. We have to work on these DC posts.

R2: Lift the DC post and work on creating 1st petal on that DC post – Ch 3, 4 TR, Ch 2, Turn your work and make 2nd DC as the working DC post – 4 TR, Ch 3. SL ST at the base of the 2nd DC. One Petal is formed.

*Turn your work, choose next 2 DC, (SL ST, Ch 3, 4 TR) on 1st DC, Ch 2, turn and lift the next DC, ( 4TR, Ch 3, SL ST) on the 2nd DC*. Repeat this *-* for other 4 sets. Total 6 Inner Petals. Cut the yarn and sew the stranding yarn.

Outer Petals Layer:

R3: The 4th round of the flower base contains 24 DC. We will be working on these 24 DC posts to form the outer petal layer. 2 DC will be used to form one petal. Repeat R2 on these 24 DC posts to make 12 Petals. Cut and sew the stranding yarn. Total 12 Petals.

If you have increased the base then repeat R2 on 36 DC. You should get 18 Petals.

If the lifting of the post and working around DC sounds confusing then check out the video.

Stem and Tag:-

Locate the centre at the back of the flower and SL ST on the base of the DC. Chain 50+ to get 5″+ stem. I have chained 50 times and attached the Knot My Designs Tag at the end.

Caution Section:-

  1. The selection of the yarn defines the size of the flower. I have used 4-ply yarn and 4.5 mm crochet hook and the flower diameter is 5″. To increase the diameter you can either choose a bulkier yarn and bigger crochet hook.
  2. The petals of the flower contain 2 layers – inner layer and outer layer. To increase the flower size, you can also increase the base and add another layer of petals.
  3. Make sure you check each petal after completion to avoid frogging at the later stage.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • String length: 5″
  • White Petals Flower: 5″

The sizes can be altered based on the count of the stitches for the rows.

Optional Alterations:-

  • You can add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pom-pom.
  • You can attach flowers, beads, tassel at the end of the bookmark
  • You can remove the string and attach a paper clip for bookmark or Hair Clip for making a hair accessory.
Or paste it on your wrapped item to make an interesting wrapping gift style.

Remember: do not over accessorise it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegant simplicity!!

Crochet Popcorn Stitch Flower Bookmark - kNot mY deSigns

Popcorn Stitch Flower Bookmark

Like any other kid, my childhood was spent behind Hardy Boys, the Famous Five, the Secret Seven and the Agatha Criste series. I was a voracious reader and would spend most of the time reading them. These books had adventure, mystery, a lesson to be taught and a message meant to be shared.

Thankfully, the kids of the 90s had either books or outdoor games, and none of the computer games and mobile phones games that we see everywhere today. Though there are still many children’s book series such as the Harry Potter, Eragon and the adventures of Narnia, there are lesser takers of these books.

And this is not only for the children. Reading should never stop with age. However, as we grow, we get so busy in our daily chores that we get even lesser time to pick that book from the shelf and flip through the pages. All the incredible collection of the books end up gathering the dust on the bookshelves.

In order to break this habit and get into reading again, I made my first bookmark years ago, and I have been making more of these since. This time not only for me but for my friends and family members. A lovely bookmark is yet another incentive to open the book and read. It certainly worked for me.

Here, I searched for a flower pattern especially, to gift to my colleague’s daughter. A creative bookmark for her; a gift and a habit that she can confidently flaunt.

Process:

I was looking for flower pattern to make a bookmark. I liked the Popcorn pattern from B.Hooked. The pattern uses Popcorn stitch to create the flower.

The pattern contains 2 steps:

  1. to create the popcorn stitch flower
  2. to form the string and tassel.

Popcorn Stitch Flower:-

R1: Starting with the Magic Circle, Chain 1 (CH), 8 Single Crochet (SC); Join with Slip Stitch (SL ST) on 1st SC.

R2: Ch 2, *create a Popcorn¹ in SC, Ch 1*; repeat *-*, join with SL ST on Ch 2.

R3: Ch 2, *create 2 Popcorns¹ in ch 1 space, Ch 1*; repeat *-*, join with SL ST on Ch 2.

¹Popcorn Stitch: [5 DC in the same stitch. Drop the loop from the hook but do not pull.Inserting the hook from front to back, pick top loops of 1st DC and the dropped loop, slip stitch to form the popcorn. ]

If you are unable to get the written pattern, click here for the video.

Tassel and String:-

Choose the yarn that you want to form the string and tassel. I picked up green left over yarn to form the stem and the tassel. I used this link to make the tassel and crocheted chain 50+ to form the stem. Sew them together to form the Flower Bookmark.

While forming the stem, I added my tag in between in the chains.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • String length: 9″
  • Flower Diameter: 3″

The sizes can be altered based on the count of the stitches for the rows.

Optional Alterations:-

  • You can add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pom-pom.
  • You can attach flowers, beads, tassel at the end of the bookmark
  • You can add your tag.

Remember: do not over accessorise it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegance simplicity!!

Crochet Flower Power Bookmark - kNot mY deSigns

Flower Power Bookmark

I believe in “Padho Aur Padhao” mantra. This means to read and teach. Learn and spread your learning.

The changing technology has enabled us to become mobile, by bringing everything into a digital form, including the book. Kindle, E-Book sites, Hub list, your local library online account etc. gives us ample options to read anywhere and anytime digitally.

However, I am still an old school gal. I like the feel of the book, Illustrative book cover and using bookmarks to save my page. It gives me a great escape from electronic devices too. Working in front of the computer for long hours, checking mobiles for chats and calls, using tab for handling all social media networking already involves too much of screen glare. Reading a book, a physical paper book gives me pleasure, keeps my eyes away from the display screen and creates a quiet meditation zone for me.

Previously, I used to buy books and bookmarks with creative quotes but now since I know to crochet, I love creating interesting bookmarks that push me to buy more books and read more!

And now, I want everyone to try out this old school book reading method by making creative, funny or attractive bookmarks. Pick a book and flaunt it with your creative bookmark. Here, I tried crocheting few flowers and turned them into girly Flower Power bookmarks!

Easy to make, easy to carry, easy to your eyes and mind!

Process:

I was looking for flower pattern to make a bookmark. I liked this Flower pattern from Rescued Paw Designs. The pattern uses Single Crochet stitch to create the flower and Bobble stitch to form the centre.

The pattern contains 2 steps:

  1. to create the flower petals.
  2. to form the string and centre bud.

Flower Petals:-

R1: Starting with a Magic Circle, Ch 1 and 12 Single Crochet (SC); Slip Stitch (SL ST) with 1st SC. Total 12 SC.

R2: Chain 8, SC from the 2nd chain from the hook, 7 SC in next 7 Chains; SL ST Back Loop on the next SC.

R3-R12: Repeat R2.

Working on the Front Loop of the R1 SC Round, Chain 6, SC from the 2nd chain from the hook, 5 SC in next 5 Chains; SL ST Front Loop on the next SC.

Bud and String:-

Create a Bobble stitch and join to the 1st chain to form a bud. Chain 50+ to form the stem of 7″+. In the end, I have added the Knot My Designs Tag. Since the yarn was thick so I left 9″ yarn to form the stem and attached the Knot My Designs tag.

You can add tassel or leaves or pom-pom or leave at that.

¹Bobble Stitch: [Chain 4, DC from the 3rd chain from the hook keeping the last loop on the hook, 4 DC in the same chain keeping the last loop on the hook (In total there will be 5 loops on the hook= original loop and partial DC). Slip Stitch on all the loops and slip stitch on the last chain to a Bobble Stitch].

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • String length: 9″
  • Flower diameter: 3″

The sizes can be altered based on the count of the stitches for the rows.

Optional Alterations:-

  • You can add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pom-pom.
  • You can attach flowers, beads, tassel at the end of the bookmark
  • You can remove the string and attach a paper clip for bookmark or Hair Clip for making a hair accessory.
  • Or paste it on your wrapped item to make an interesting wrapping gift.
  • You can add your tag.

Remember: do not over accessorise it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegant simplicity!!

Crochet Striped Pencil Bookmark - Knot My Designs

Striped Pencil Bookmark

A weekend spent in the lap of woods, connecting with nature and enjoying the beauty of mother earth; there is nothing more psychotherapeutic than this. A walk in the park, surrounded by trees, streams or creeks, and birds animals, is also emotionally purging than working out in a gym, which focuses only on our body.

One of our usual activity is walking in the park. I am fortunate that San Antonio Parks and Recreation Authority has created and maintained so many parks all across the city. While enjoying the Salado Creek I recorded this interesting sound of the birds and the owls. I tried to look for bird’s nest but couldn’t spot any in this dense forest.

I deeply enjoyed the sound of chirping. Suddenly, I struck with the idea of holding a contest. Listen to the sounds that the birds make to communicate among themselves and imagine if they are talking like humans. I loved the participation of the contestants. The responses were entertaining. A couple of them got excited and responded more than once.

Below is the video of the contest that I posted on the Facebook page: theknotmydesigns. You all are welcome to post your conversation too!!! The participation is every lasting!!!

P.S. For your active participation, you will be eligible for free gift i.e. A pencil bookmark from Knot My Designs!!!

The conversation contest: Translate the conversation

In order to thank them for their active participation, I designed Thank You Cards for them and gifted a Pencil bookmark. Below is the striped pencil bookmark. Since I believe in to learn and teach mantra ->

“Padho Aur Padhao”

It was another attempt for my fellow participants to buy books and read more.

Process:

The pattern is stripped which involves one base colour (BC) and another contrasting colour (CC). I have mainly worked on the CC-2BC-CC-2BC-CC-2BC-CC pattern using Single Crochet (SC). There are a couple of pencil designs having 3BC-CC-3BC-CC-3BC and BC-2CC-2BC-2CC-2BC-CC. The pencil cone contains BC as the skin and the tip with CC.

Pattern:- CC-2BC-CC-2BC-CC-2BC-CC

Pencil Length:-

R1: Starting with Base colour (BC), Chain 30+1. SC from 2nd hook. Ch 1 and turn. Total 30 SC.

R2: With BC, SC in every SC. Change to CC and Ch 1 and turn. Total 30 SC.

R3: With CC, SC in every SC. Change to BC and Ch 1 and turn. Total 30 SC.

Continue SC in every row, Ch 1 and turn.

Follow the sequence of 2BC-CC-2BC-CC-2BC. With CC, SC around to form a border of. 3 SC in the corner SC to form a clear rectangular edge.

Pick one side and start working on the pencil base cone and the tip.

Base Cone and Tip:-

R1: Using BC, Ch 1 and SC 10 times. Ch 1 and turn. Total 10 SC.

R2: SCtog, 6 SC, SCtog. Ch 1 and turn. Total 8 SC.

R3: SC in every SC. Ch 1 and turn. Total 8 SC.

R4: SCtog, 4 SC, SCtog. Ch 1 and turn. Total 6 SC.

R5: SC in every SC. Ch 1 and turn. Total 6 SC.

R6: SCtog, 2 SC, SCtog. Ch 1 and turn. Total 4 SC.

R7: SC in every SC. Change to CC, Ch 1 and turn. Total 4 SC.

R8: With CC, SCtog, SCtog. Ch 1 and turn. Total 2 SC.

R9: SC in every SC. Ch 1 and turn. Total 2 SC.

R10: SCtog and Slip Stitch and sew the remaining strand.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Pencil Length: 9″
  • Width: 2″

The sizes can be altered based on the count of the stitches for the rows.

Optional Alterations:-

  • You can add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pom-pom.
  • You can attach flowers, beads, tassel at the end of the bookmark
  • You can remove the string and attach a paper clip for bookmark

Crochet Key Tag Miniature Ball - Knot My Designs

Key Tag Miniature Ball

A visit to Legoland drew my attention towards these tiny items. The depiction of the world in this shrunken avatar is creative, imaginative and impressive at the same time. I was supposed to make something creative to distinguish the car keys from the other bunch of keys when I remembered the Legoland.

Yes, we do have amigurumi (crocheted or knitted stuffed toy). It gives us the inspiration to create any item and not just the toys. I have been dabbling with bookmarks, another concept of making miniatures. For example, I made smaller version Harry Potter Hogwarts House Scarves or Dark Rose FlowerDachshund DogPansy Leaf, other Flowers, and Leaves.

Key Tag Miniature Ball was my first attempt to make a tiny version of something that is neither flashy to grab unwanted attention nor too infinitesimal that it gets lost in the crowd. I decided to crochet tags and after various attempts on working on flowers, leaves, petals, amigurumi owl, I decided to make a small ball. The bright red colour was easy to detect and the item is not going to occupy a lot of space while carrying.

Process:

With 3.5mm crochet hook, we are trying to make a small ball.

R 1: Magic Circle, ch 1, 6 Single Crochet (SC) in the round, join with Slip Stitch (Sl St) at the beginning of the stitch. (6 SC)

R 2: Ch 1, 2 SC in every SC, join the round with Sl St at the beginning of the stitch. (12 SC)

R 3: Ch 1, *1 SC in next SC, 2SC in next SC *, repeat *-* and join the round with Sl St at the beginning of the stitch. (18 SC)

R 4: Ch 1, *Single crochet 2 together (SC2Tog), SC in next SC *, repeat *-*and join the round with Sl St at the beginning of the stitch. (12 SC)

R 5: Ch 1, SC2Tog on every 2 SC, join the round with Sl St at the beginning of the stitch. (6 SC)

R 6: Pull up a string to form the tag string and sew in the ball.

Stuffing: Stuff cotton into the ball with help of throw pen or crochet hook to create that stuffed ball.

Caution Section:-

  1. The yarn quality matters in making stuffed amigurumi or miniature items. The preferred yarn choice should be cotton to give the required sturdiness.
  2. Crochet hook selection also matters. Based on your technique of tight stitch style or loose stitch style, choose the crochet hook. It can be different than the recommended one.
  3. I chose a smaller crochet hook to give a tighter and closer stitch. Also, I tried to stitch tightly than my usual stitch technique.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Circumference of the ball = 1.75″
  • Tag Length: 4″

Optional Alterations:-

  • The sizes can be changed based on your requirement.
  • You can use different colours to create interesting balls.
  • Adding a tag is optional.
  • You can add tassels or pompom. Link to create pom-pom / DIY-Tassels.

Remember: do not over accessorize it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegance simplicity!!

Crochet Naming Alphabet Appliques Free Pattern on Baskets for Home Decor - Knot My Designs

Naming Alphabet Appliques

In a growing family, in order to avoid clutter, it is best to use boxes or sections to keep the items arranged rather than lying around. For cold regions, as soon as winter approaches, the winter accessories (scarves, mittens, cowls, beanies, hats, gloves etc.) are all out for daily use. The best way to keep them organized is to box them.

That’s what my sister decided, and she bought a few clothed boxes to keep them in the mudroom. Now, with the increase in the number of accessories, it became necessary to label them. So, I decided to sew the names on each of the boxes for each family member. Embroidering the alphabets was time taking and gave me the idea for making appliques using crochet. I created alphabet appliques depicting the first letter of their names.

Now there are different ways to label them. Stickers, Fabric paint, Stencil Alphabets, Alphabet appliques made of fabric etc.

Process:

Thankfully there were patterns online to help me to try a few. I could have sat n wrote the pattern myself. But due to time constraints, I started looking for the pattern online. I liked the Moogly Crochet Alphabet Appliques. “A”, “K” and “S” followed a similar link. “I” is simple single crochet stitches for 2-3 rows.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Size a single applique: 3″-4″

Optional Alterations:-

  • The sizes can be changed based on your requirement.
  • You can give a defined edging.
  • The edging can be made of Single Crochet (SC), Crab Stitch, Slip Stitch, Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC).
  • Instead of regular yarn, fur yarn will bring out a pop to the border.
  • Instead of going for a different colour for the border, use both the base colours around for alternate rows.
    • The border shouldn’t be too broad to pop out. The purpose should be to provide a clean edge.

Remember: do not over accessorize it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegance simplicity!!

Crochet Harry Potter Hogwarts House Scarf Bookmark Free Pattern for Harry Potter Novel Series lover! - Knot My Designs

Harry Potter Series in the library - Knot My Designs

If you are looking for a complete collection of Harry Potter Series, you can go to a bookstore or just visit any book over; a fiction lover or a fantasy lover that you know and you will find it all in their library or collections.

When an ardent Harry Potter fan asked me to make a creative bookmark to adorn the collection, I decided to surprise them with Hogwarts House scarves as Bookmarks!

If you are familiar with Harry Potter Series, there are 4 houses in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry – Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherin.

Gryffindor has a lion as the symbol and it stands for bravery, daring, nerve, and chivalry. The house colours are deep red and gold.

Hufflepuff has a badger as the symbol depicting loyalty, hard working, dedication, honesty, and tolerance. The house colours are yellow and black.

Ravenclaw has an eagle in its logo and it values wit, creativity, and wisdom. The house colours are blue and bronze.

Slytherin has a serpent as the symbol that represents ambition, cleverness, cunning, resourcefulness, and pure blood heritage. The house colours are green and silver.

Info Credit: Harry Potter Wiki

Process:

5 Little Monsters – Hogwarts Scarf bookmarks helped me to complete Hogwarts House Scarf Bookmark. They are made using 2 patterns as mentioned by Erica in 5 Little Monsters – A thick striped version and a thin striped version.

For Gryffindor, I used yellow and red colours and thick striped version. Unfortunately, the gold cotton yarn wasn’t available at that time.

For Hufflepuff, I used yellow and black colours and thick striped version.

For Ravenclaw, I used blue and bronze colours and thin striped version. The metallic bronze yarn thickness is different, thus I used 2 rows for 1 as per the instructions.

For Slytherin, I used green and grey colours and thin striped version. The silver yarn wasn’t available for me.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Length: 8″
  • Width: 1.5″

Optional Alterations:-

  • The sizes can be changed based on your requirement.
  • You can give a defined edging.
  • The edging can be made of Single Crochet (SC), Crab Stitch, Slip Stitch, Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC).
  • You can add tassels like the Harry Potter 1. Follow the link to make mini tassels.

Crochet Christmas Tree Skirt Free Pattern with Peppermint Candy Style - Knot My Designs

Christmas Treeskirt

You better watch out, you better not cry
You better not pout, I’m telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
(Big, fat Santa’s on his way)…

Christmas Carols, Christmas decorations, Christmas is on the way!

It’s Christmas! Every mall, every store, every home looks beautiful decorated with Poinsettia, candles, lights, stockings, gift-wrapped items, wreaths made with pinecones and lots of other ornaments. But any decoration is incomplete without a Christmas tree!

History (wiki) says that according to the Encyclopædia Britannica, “The use of evergreen trees, wreaths, and garlands to symbolise eternal life was a custom of the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, and Hebrews. Tree worship was common among the pagan Europeans and survived their conversion to Christianity in the Scandinavian customs of decorating the house and barn with evergreens at the New Year to scare away the devil and of setting up a tree for the birds during Christmastime.”

Another folk version defined Christmas tree as “Tree of Paradise in remembrance of the birth of Adam and Eve; where the tree with apples is now replaced with the red shiny baubles.”

In modern world, we decorate them with bells, candy canes, snow globes, lights, garlands, ribbons, tinsels, golden, silver and other different colored baubles; the tree skirt covers the tree stand;  snowman or reindeer shaped ornaments are hanged; and a star at the tree top is added to complete the decoration.

Process:

When my customer was decorating her Christmas tree, she approached me for Christmas tree skirt for her tree. After gathering the details about the decoration theme, I decided to make a peppermint candy style tree skirt with nude and red yarn. I followed the Redheart – Peppermint Candy Throw and Pillow pattern.

But it was difficult to get the initial startup. So, I used SmoothFoxLover – Christmas Tree Skirt to get the start.

My tree skirt dimension was supposed to be 50″ in diameter. I worked for 6 rows as mentioned in the pattern. Then instead of switching yarn at alternate rows, I followed the Redheart – Peppermint Candy Throw and Pillow procedure to continue further. I kept on increasing counts till the skirt diameter was 50″.

Pattern:-

The design is evolved from bits and pieces of 2 different patterns. It can be divided into sections for better understanding.

  1. Initial Shell stitch line.
  2. Expansion of the Open Base.
  3. Peppermint Style Body

Initial Shell Stitch line:-

R1: With Bone Color (Base Color- BC). Chain 5.

R2: Double Crochet (DC) in the 4th chain from the hook, DC in the 5th chain in the hook. (A shell is created) Do not cut the yarn; do not turn.

R3: Chain 5, DC in the 4th and 5th ch as in R2.

Repeat R3 or keep adding shells to the line 16 more times. Do not cut the yarn.  Total 18 shells, 36 DC, 18 ch-3 space.

Expansion of the Open Base:-

R1: Join Autumn Red (Contrast Color-CC) on the right side (RS); (Ch 2, DC, Ch 2, 2DC) in the 1st ch-3 space. Make [V stitch]¹ on every ch-3 space. Turn. Total 18 V stitches, 72 DC, 18 ch-2 space.

R2: Continue with CC on the wrong side (WS); Slip Stitch on 1st DC. Ch 3, [V stitch]¹ in the 1st ch-2 space, DC in DC, *Skip 2 stitches, DC in next stitch, [V stitch]¹ in ch-2 space, DC in DC*; repeat *-* till the end. Skip the last stitch. Turn. Total 18 V stitches, 108 DC, 18 ch-2 space.

R3: RS: Slip Stitch on 1st DC. Ch 3, DC in next DC, [V stitch]¹ in the 1st ch-2 space, DC in 2 DC, *Skip 2 stitches, DC in 2 DC, [V stitch]¹ in ch-2 space, DC in 2 DC*; repeat *-* till the end. Skip the last stitch. Turn. Total 18 V stitches, 144 DC, 18 ch-2 space.

Peppermint Style Body:-

R1: using Base color (carrying CC in the back), Ch 2, DC in 4 DC, 2 DC in ch-2 space, DC in 4 DC; *with CC in front and BC in back (DC in 4 DC, 2 DC in ch-2 sp, DC in 4 DC), with BC in front and CC in back (DC in 4 DC, 2 DC in ch-2 sp, DC in 4 DC)*; repeat *-* till the end, ending with CC 10 DC.Turn. Total 180 DC. 90 BC- DC, 90 CC-DC.

R2: Using CC in front and BC in back; Ch 2, DC in 9 DC, 2DC in next DC; *with BC in front and CC in back (DC in 9 DC, 2DC in next DC), with CC in front and BC in back (DC in 9 DC, 2DC in next DC)*; repeat *-* till the end, ending with CC 11 DC.Turn. Total 198 DC. 99 BC- DC, 99 CC-DC.

R3: Using BC in front and CC in back; Ch 2, DC in 10 DC, 2DC in next DC; *with BC in front and CC in back (DC in 10 DC, 2DC in next DC), with BC in front and CC in back (DC in 10 DC, 2DC in next DC)*; repeat *-* till the end, ending with CC 12 DC.Turn. Total 216 DC. 108 BC- DC,108 CC-DC.

Repeat R2- R3 till you get the desired diameter. I aimed for 50″.

¹[V Stitch] – (2 DC, Ch 2, 2DC) in same chain space.

Caution Section:-

  1. This tree skirt contains 2 colours divided into alternate Red and Bone colour 6 times.
  2. Make sure the next row should match the colour sequence of the previous row.
  3. Carry the other colour in the back to avoid knots and joining of the yarn.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • The diameter of the tree skirt: 50″.

Optional Alterations:-

  • The sizes can be changed based on your requirement.
  • You can add a different colour edging to the tree skirt.

Crochet Nature Captured in Books Free Bookmark Pattern - Knot My Designs

Nature Captured in Books

“One of the oldest arguments in the history of psychology is the Nature vs Nurture debate. Each of these sides has strong points making it harder to decide whether a person’s development is predisposed in his DNA, or a majority of it is influenced by his life experiences and environment” (as mentioned in Explorable in Nature vs Nurture).

This is not just about humans but nature at large. What would have happened if the earth was without any flora or fauna?

Even though other planets look fascinating, they fail to come any closer to the Earth, which looks so beautiful and colourful with the greenery and oceans.

How about bringing the same beauty to your bookshelf, bedroom, and office?  Thanks to crochet! You don’t need to pluck flowers to bring them home; just have crochet flower and leaves as bookmarks!

Process:

  1. Leaflet Bookmark: I used the same leaf pattern that I have selected for the Christmas Wreath for Leaflet Bookmark. I am just obsessed with this leaf pattern.
  2. Sunny Petal Flower Bookmark: I liked the flower from Ravelry and made one as a bookmark. The same pattern could be used as an embellishment on hats, brackets, necklaces scarves, headband etc.
  3. Dark Rose Flower Bookmark: The complete instructional blog could be accessed from this link Dark Rose Flower.
  4. Maple Fall Bookmark: I am always inclined to Irish Crochet. I used the leftover leaf from Maple Wreath and converted into a bookmark.
  5. Bell Flower Bookmark: The pattern is in Bell Flower post.
  6. Maple Leaf Bookmark:  link is already posted.

Crochet Dark Rose Flower Bookmark Free Pattern for Book Lovers - Knot My Designs

Dark Rose Flower Bookmark

When in Bangalore, I used to love visiting Crosswords bookstore, reading the books and collecting the bookmarks that came with the books. These were card strips with rhymes, images printed on it. The witty one-liner, creative images excited me,  so much that I would collect them all together. I still don’t know, if it were the love for those interesting bookmarks or the love of reading books that pulled me to Crosswords every time.

Well, far from Bangalore and Crosswords, in my world of Crocheting, I still recall them. In crocheting, there are various flower patterns used as embellishments for the scarves, hats, warmers etc. I decided the make few of these flower patterns and instead of attaching them to a clothing, I decided to make a bookmark. Different variety of flowers, small leaves, small petals, and thin long stems. It is an interesting way to use the left-overs yarn in your Stash Basket too. I always wanted to learn how to make a rose using crochet. This was an exciting project to work on!

Process:

I used 2 different patterns to make this Dark Rose Flower Bookmark. I loved the crochet pattern of rose flower from SkipToMyLou – Easy Rose Crochet Pattern. I chose leaves design from LakeViewCottageKids – A Little Leaf Pattern. For the stem, I made chain 60+ ( enough to cross the length of the book). Sew them all together to create a rose flower stem.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • String length: 9″
  • Rose diameter: 4″
  • Rose Leaf: 1″

The sizes can be altered based on the count of the stitches for the rows.

Optional Alterations:-

  • You can add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pompom.
  • You can attach flowers, beads, tassel at the end of the bookmark
  • You can add your tag.

Remember: do not over accessorise it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegance simplicity!!
