Crochet Olive Shell Rectangular Shawl for an adult woman - Knot My Designs

Olive Shell Rectangular Shawl

Shawl or Wrap plays an important role in woman’s wardrobe as an all-rounder accessory. There are various different styles to carry a shawl; as a prayer shawl, a party shoulder robe for dresses, a winter cowl or scarf, or as a stole to go along with Indian kurta.

This multi-purpose accessory is a wonder and a gift to every woman. I wanted to make a shawl that not only brings warmth but also adds contrast to a gorgeous sequin dress. I chose to make a shawl using Olive colour yarn. Traditionally, this colour olive green represents the peace and brings comfort to eyes.

Easy to wear and carry around, the thickness of the wool promises ample warmth. You can either wear as a day-lunch or an evening outhouse party.

Process:

I like the corner to corner (C2C) style Shell pattern by Hillary on her blog. I did some calculations and modifications to make a rectangular shawl. The process contains series of double crochet stitch (DC), Single Crochet (SC) and Chain (ch).

R1: chain 68+3. Multiples of 4+3.

The chain was 19″ long.

R2: Starting with 3 DC in the 4th hook on the chain, *skip 3 ch, SC in next ch, ch 3, 3 DC in same Ch*; repeat from *-* till the end of the chain with SC in the last Ch; Ch 3, turn.

R3: 3 DC in 1st SC, *SC, Ch 3, 3 DC in the Ch 3 space of the previous row*; repeat from *-* till the end of the chain with SC in the last Ch; Ch 3, turn.

Repeat R3 until the desired shawl length.

Last Row (LR): 2 DC in 1st SC, * SC in next Ch 3 space, Ch 3*; repeat from *-* till the end of the chain with SC in the last Ch. Slip Stitch and sew.

Remember: to give any lacey effect the crochet hook should be more than 2-3mm bigger than the recommended hook.

Since the yarn was bulky and stretchy, I used 5.5mm, a smaller hook, than recommended.

Caution Section:-

  • Depending on the texture of the yarn, you can either choose a larger crochet hook other than recommended one.
  • For edging the last row, you can change the crochet hook to a smaller size to give a tighter set.
  • Check the initial 3-4 rows to get the desired width. The number of chains and the stitching style will change the width.
  • Every person works loose or medium or tight stitch. Thus, the width and length of the scarf changes. I focused on medium stitch to give the smooth flow.
  • I used a small crochet hook than recommended as the wool has elasticity.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Length: 65″
  • Width: 18″.

Optional Alterations:-

  • Add a line of tassels to the ends of both sides along the width. 4 Tassels at the corners will also work. You can reduce the size of the scarf as tassels will add another 10″.
  • Attach pom-poms to each of the corners.
  • The tassels or pompoms colour should be of the base colour or any contrast colour. Shades of white, golden, silver, brown, creme, blue, olive will add the beauty.
  • Pom-poms and tassels can be of wool, faux fur, ribbons, plastic, resin etc. Link to make pom-pom and tassels.
  • The long length edging, you can have a Crab Stitch, Single Crochet, Slip Stitch.
  • Decrease the width and convert this wrap/stole/shawl into a beautiful lacy scarf.

Remember: do not over accessorise it. This takes away the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegant simplicity!!

Crochet Yellowstone Wraparound Shawl for an adult woman - Knot My Designs

Yellowstone Wraparound Shawl

Have you ever been in a situation in which you have a certain dish in your mind and you enter the restaurant to curb the craving for that dish, but the moment you glance at the menu, you change your mind?

Like a kid in a candy store, confused and excited at the same time, you change your mind and end up buying something else. Somewhere you still crave for the first choice but the chance is gone. The purchase is made and you cannot get it anymore now.

“I was in the same shoes. I am like a crocheter in a pattern store”. With hundreds of intricate and colourful patterns floating around me and attracting me, drilling down to one pattern is a huge task. There is a vision, a look, and my journey to find that particular design continues till I get it.

When I started the Yellowstone Wraparound Shawl, I do not even remember the number of patterns I had already tried; shells, picots, closed stitches, trebles, star stitch, arcade stitch etc. Frogging 5-10 rows and again looking for a different design. I still kept trying for that particular pattern that kept reappearing in my dreams.

Attempt 1 – failed

Attempt 2 – failed

The pattern was V-Stitch. After every unsuccessful attempt, I concluded that v-stitch was the best suitable design. Although, I still get tempted to try out another pattern. I, finally, redirected myself to follow the initial gut feeling.

Process:

The process contains series of double crochet stitch (DC) and Chain 1 (ch).

R1: chain 90. Multiples of 3+4.

The chain was 21″ long.

R2: Starting from the 4th hook on the chain, DC, ch 1, DC, *skip 1 ch, DC, ch 1, DC*; repeat from *-* till the end of the chain with 2 chain stitches. skip next ch and DC.

R3: Ch 2, *(DC, Ch 1, DC ) in next ch 1 space; repeat * in all the ch-1 space, ending with DC in the last row DC.

Repeat R3 until the desired shawl length.

Remember: to give any lacey effect the crochet hook should be more than 2-3mm bigger than the recommended hook.

Since the yarn was bulky and stretchy, I used 5.5mm, a smaller hook, than recommended.

Winter/Fall/Spring Seasoned Crochet Rose Bloom Stole Free Pattern for an adult woman - kNot mY deSigns

Rose Bloom Stole

We give attention to an item in 2 broadly classified manners – simplicity and ornamentation.

A simple yet pleasing item always catches our attention. You always have one question running on your mind whenever you see it; how it is so beautiful and yet so simple? There’s no correct answer to it, but you agree on any justifiable response.

On the other hand, ornamentation is the art to complement the existing piece without losing its original touch. There is a lot of scope of creativity for one to play around and accessorise the piece. The common fashion accessories are jackets, boots, belts, ties, hats, gloves, jewellery, and shawls. Various permutations of these accessories give you a distinct look.

I am never shy of experimenting and in order to try something new, for my spring collection. I made this lace wrap. The spring is the season of colours and perhaps the best time to sport this lace wrap with all styles including maxis, minis, slip and strapless. Whatever you wear, accessorise it with a lacy stole and you are all fashionable and attractive.

Process:

I was very much fascinated by the Tamara’s Fortune’s Wrap. I started following the pattern exactly as mentioned. Instead of making 25 rows I opted for 24 rows as the per the size I was looking for. This is my maiden attempt to learn corner to corner crochet stitch.

Remember: to give any lacey effect the crochet hook should be more than 2-3mm bigger than the recommended hook.

Product Specifications:

Winter/Fall Seasoned Pumpkin Loom Knit Cowl for an adult woman - kNot mY deSigns

Pumpkin Loom Knit Cowl

The most attractive part in Knitting is the cable formations. The cable designs created through knitting are so refined. It is very difficult to get that same perfection, finesse and flow through crochet. I know this because I tried a lot of times and I failed every time.

I  love with CROCHET for the very reason that gives us the choices of working on extensive combinations and patterns. It is something that is impossible to compare with Knitting. But my craziness to get those cable formations, motivated me to get a loom knit kit. I thought I will be creating some unique combinations of knit cables and crochet patterns. To my despair, the loom knitting styles are best used for lacey effects or for thick gauge yarn to create scarves, hats or afghans.

Having said that, it is much easier to pick up knitting designs and that too in a short period of time. Loom Knit Kits provide quicker and easier methods to create scarves, wraps, dishcloths, hats, afghans etc.

I am not saddened by this experience, rather I am learning loom knitting and getting familiar with its nuances and terminologies. Today, I am just trying it out, One day I might become a knitting expert, who knows?

Process:

I bought Boye Value Loom Kit in order to learn everything in loom knitting. I tried circular and rectangular looms to create wraps but weren’t successful in achieving that look.

BEGINNERS: How To Loom Knit A Scarf by Glama is an easy video to follow. For first timers in loom knitting, you can create beautiful scarfs within few hours by watching this video.

For this Cowl, I used 26 pegged rectangular loom.  Out of 26 pegs, 24 pegs are used to form an 8 shape on each parallel pegs.

Instead of going all the way to 70″-80″ scarf, I made the scarf till 30″ and joined the edges to form a cowl.

Note: Please make sure your yarn thickness is more than DK ( 8-Ply). Loom knit does not provide close stitch like knitting if you are using yarn lesser than 8-ply thickness. Either you can use 2-3 strands of the same colour to provide the thickness or use a thick yarn.

Caution Section:-

  1. Check the thickness of the yarn. In the most loom knit, in order to get the pattern, they use chunky yarn. I have used the 2 strands of yarn.
  2. Check the measurement of the width because as you leave the loom the scarf will shrink by at least 0.5″.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Circumference: 30″
  • Width: 6″.

Optional Alterations:-

  • Attach pom-poms, tassels, buttons, appliques, flowers made of crochet, leather, fabric, resin, faux fur etc. at the joining the cowl to give a defined look.
  • The tassels or pompoms colour should be of the base colour or any contrast colour. Shades of white, golden, silver, brown, creme, mustard will add the beauty. Link to make pom-pom and tassels.
  • You can involve 2 different contrast colours of yarn while creating the cowl.

Remember: do not over accessorize it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegance simplicity!!

Winter/ Fall Seasoned Crochet MishMash Minted Scarf Free Pattern for an Adult Woman - kNot mY deSigns

MishMash Minted Scarf

Why have people decided associated babies or gender with colours? If it’s blue, then it’s a boy, if it’s pink it’s a girl. Since the time I can recall, my wardrobe has had shades of blue, thankfully, rather than the gender stereotyped pink. Interestingly, when I grew up, I came across many who also considered blue as their preferred colour. With so many shades available, it is not at all hard to say that every woman has at least one blue outfit in her wardrobe. After all, Blue goes with everything!

Well, it was no surprise when the customer too asked for a minty blue colour scarf for herself, even though her favourite colour is purple. After looking at the colour of the yarn, I decided to go for a lacy stitch pattern which can be draped as a scarf as well as a cowl based on your need.

Process:

The pattern is selected from The Complete Book of Crochet Stitch Designs. I have used 2-3 bigger size hook than the recommended one to give a lacy look. Chain multiples of 4 +1.

R1: Single Crochet (SC) in the 7th chain(ch) from the hook, ch 2, skip(sk) next ch, Double Crochet(DC) in next ch, *ch 2, sk next ch, SC in next ch, DC in next ch; rep from * across, turn.

R2: ch 1, SC in 1st DC, * sk next ch-2 space, (DC, ch 3, DC) in next SC, sk next ch-2 space, SC in next DC; rep from * across, ending with last SC in 3rd ch of the turning ch, turn.

R3: Ch 5 (counts as DC, ch 2), SC in next ch-3 loop, ch 2, DC in next SC, *ch 2, SC in next ch-3 loop, ch 2, DC in next SC; rep from * across, turn.

Rep Rows 2-3 for the pattern.

The female scarf measures 70″ by 6″.

Caution Section:-

  1. The thickness and elasticity of the yarn and the chosen crochet hook determines the Lacey effects.
  2. Also, your technique impacts the smoothness or finished look. Everyone has different techniques ranging from tight stitching style to medium to loose stitching styles.
  3. To increase the gap or increase the Lacey effect, it is best if the crochet hook is 2-3 sizes greater than the recommended hook.
  4. playing with points 2 and 3 i.e. either increasing the crochet hook or changing the technique or mix of both you can give different flair to the same stitch pattern. For e.g. The recommended hook for Caron simply soft yarn is 5mm, but I chose 6 mm hook and loose stitch style.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Length: 70″
  • Width: 6″.

Optional Alterations:-

  • Add a line of tassels to the ends of both sides along the width. 4 Tassels at the corners will also work. You can reduce the size of the scarf as tassels will add another 10″.
  • Attach pom-poms to each of the corners.
  • The tassels or pompoms colour should be of the base colour or any contrast colour. Shades of white, golden, silver, brown, creme, mustard will add the beauty.
  • Pom-poms and tassels can be of wool, faux fur, ribbons, plastic, resin etc. Link to make pom-pom and tassels.
  • The long length edging, you can have a Crab Stitch, Single Crochet, Slip Stitch.
  • Increase the width and convert this scarf into a beautiful lace wrap/shawl.

Remember: do not over accessorise it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegance simplicity!!

Winter/Fall Seasoned Crochet Solomon's Knot Scarf Free Pattern for an adult woman - kNot mY deSigns

Solomon’s Knot Scarf

Did you know Solomon’s Knot is a traditional decorative motif? The knot is not a knot per say, but an interlinked closed loop. Different cultures interpreted the knot differently. Since the beginning and end are not visible, it symbolises eternity and immortality. The knot represents two twisted loops entwined together as a couple that neither has a start nor an end. It also named as lover’s knot for this reason. It is also associated with religious beliefs as a symbol of faith and valued as a symbol of prestige.

There are many beliefs attached to it; I wasn’t inclined to any. Rather, I had my own connection with this beautiful and intricate design, and I could see it turning into a perfect for a wrap, a scarf or a shawl with elegant lace style. This is how I decided to make a scarf using this pattern. The gorgeous fuchsia colour provides an additional grace to the outcome.

Enjoy the elegance that adds charm in your personality ladies!

Process:

After searching through several blogs of describing the process of Solomon’s Knot, I liked the Amelia Is Rabbit Blog. The base with single crochet row helps create an edge for the scarf. The written instructions might be tricky to follow. Even after following the blog a video gave me the clear indication of how to create the Solomon’s Knot.

For e.g. The recommended hook for the yarn is 6.5mm, but I chose 6.5 mm hook and loose stitch style.

Winter/Fall Seasoned Crochet Blue-Black Angel Scarf Free Pattern for an adult woman - Knot My Designs

Blue-Black Angel Scarf

Feng Shui, meaning wind and water, is a Chinese philosophical system of harmonising everyone with the surrounding environment.

After surmounting over the criticism and the mystical implications, Feng Shui is now followed everywhere across the nations. It is used to create a peaceful atmosphere. It brings good luck and used for healing purposes. In today’s world, this culture is not only restricted to China but is admired all over the world.

People use different Feng Shui symbols such as Gold Fish/Koi, bamboo, turtle/tortoise, dragons, laughing Buddha, mandarin ducks, lotus and 3-legged Frog etc. to use themselves or gift someone. They use different elements of Feng Shui too.

In the world of art and design, Water element of Feng Shui is applied in the home decor. This brings calmness and coolness along with refreshing your space. The proposed colours for Water element is blue and black.

That’s what inspired me to buy this blue and black ombre yarn. I wanted a cool colour that can easily go with most of the dresses, and I named it as Angel Scarf.

Process:

Birgit, a fibre enthusiast, wrote this simple ByNumber19 – Papillion Scarf pattern. I was attracted to the outcome of the product and decided to make one using the same butterfly stitch. Did you know Papillion means Butterfly? The pattern consists of Double crochet stitches, chain stitches, and Single crochet stitches. It was a learning for me as this was my first attempt at making a scarf. The idea of blogging about it came later. Thus, I do not have many pictures. Enjoy the making!

Pattern:-

Instead of Ch 16, I chained 23+3 to create a wider scarf. The process requires multiples of 8+3.

R1: Double Crochet(DC) on the 4th chain from the hook. Total- 24 DC.

R2-R3: Ch 3, 2 DC, Ch 6, skip 4, *3 DC, Ch 6, skip 4, 3 DC*; repeat from *-* till you reach the end, turn.

R4: Ch 2, DC in next 2 DC, Ch 3, 1 Single Crochet (SC) using Ch 6 space of R2 and R3, Ch 3, *DC in next 3 DC, Ch 3, 1 SC using the Ch 6 space of below R2 and R3, Ch 3, DC in next 3 DC*; repeat from *-* till the end, turn.

Repeat R2, R3, and R4 till you get the desired length.

Last row: Ch 3, DC in next 2 DC, 2 DC in Ch 3 space, skip next (SC), 2 DC in Ch 3 space, *DC in next 3 DC, 2 DC in Ch 3 space, skip next (SC), 2 DC in Ch 3 space*; repeat *-* till you reach the end.
